What is Campral and what does it do? I know it is related to alcohol abuse but that's about all I know. Thanks to all who read and replied to my "alcoholic son" posting. I am in search of a group to sit it on and also other programs that may be in my area. I am so, so angry about this all. Sometimes I want to beat my head on the wall till I pass out! I know I must treat him as an adult but it becomes so hard to keep that focus while he behaves like such a child.

Hello, HB. I don't know the specifics but Campral suppresses the cravings for alcohol. In combination with individual or group therapy it's a great form of support. I have 6 months' sobriety today, and don't think I could have made it past the first 30 days without this medication.
It's not without side effects but they were more than tolerable compared to the depth of anxiety I had about being able to stay sober for any length of time.ClearSkies

Anger is perfectly normal and to be expected in your circumstance. More the reason for a group - they've all been there.
I recommend getting "The Language of Letting Go" - it has daily meditations and 'things to work on' for people in your situation.

I use Campral and it is great. It has a calming effect and here is a clip I found on the net which summarizes basically what my doctor says. Alcohol has a negative effect on GABA neurotransmission in the brain and Campral helps stabilize it. There is tons of good information if you google "GABA" and Campral. I have a problem with alcohol and cocaine. Campral helps with both."Campral (acamprosate) is a structural analogue of the amino acid homotaurine and the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). While it's specific mechanism of action is not entirely understood, neurotransmossion systems involving GABA and it's excitatory counterpart glutamate are observed to be thrown out of equilibrium when chronically exposed to alcohol; Campral, by mimicing GABA's actions and interacting with these systems directly, is thought to help restore this equilibrium."
This is the end of the thread.
