Hi Everyone,
I thought I was in for better times this week, because my psychiatrist agreed to let me stop taking Antabuse (bad stuff!) and start taking Campral. But now that I've read up a little more on this drug, I've found that one of the "rare" side effects is sudden death!
Huh? Most meds have some pretty bizarre side-effects listed in the "rare" column. Until Campral, the only one I ran across was Lamictal (the rare rash that could turn fatal). I never took Lamictal, though. I AM taking Campral, and I could be described as the nervous type.
Does anyone else know about this? The various drug descriptions I've read don't go into detail about the circumstances of sudden death in users of Campral. What other conditions do the "rare" patients have? Does anything place a patient at higher risk for this side effect?
Thanks to all,
Reggie BoStar

Well, one thing is certain. Anyone suffering from this particular side effect isn't going to go running to the drug company to complain!
Sheesh. The price I pay for no cravings. To the moon, Alice !!!

Reggie,
I gave this a severe googling and came up with no additional information. I did see it mentioned that people who drink moderately are less likely to die of "sudden death". Inversely I guess, a teetotaler on camparol (no wonder I can't google what I can't spell) would have a higher risk of "sudden death" than a moderate drinker, which is probably miniscule.
I'll ask my sister who's a nurse practitioner. She's the entire medical staff at a 3-county homeless shelter south of Pittsburgh and sees a lot of substance abuse and medication issues.

ALL treatment-emergent adverse events must be reported during the clinical trials of drugs when the data is submitted to the FDA for approval.
Note that "treatment-emergent adverse events" is not the same as a "side-effect". It just means that the event coincided in time with the taking of the drug and could be unrelated to the drug. If someone with an occult thrombosis that existed for years were to have the lesion suddenly let loose during a drug trial, it must be reported as a sudden death.
I would not worry about it.
