Xanax addiction?

Posted by sunny10 on October 20, 2005, at 8:47:47

I recently discovered that a friend of mine is buying Xanax off the street. Apparently this friend is taking quite a bit of it everyday.

Why would someone take Xanax- what does it do for you? Is it a high? Is it an anti-anxiety?

Is it possible to be addicted to it? What are the possible problems associated with Xanax addiction if there is such a thing?

Full of questions,
sunny10

well I know a little....
xanax is a benzodiazepine, an antianxiety med- lovely, effective, and fairly quick acting to calm you down. I've taken it before, but not more than a single pill at a time. I imagine it's a quite peaceful, "chilled out" sort of high. I've taken up to three benzo pills-ativan specifically (whatever the mgs were) at a time before and that was my experience (really I just mainly fall asleep).

It is very possible to be addicted to xanax. This drug ends up being abused by a lot of people. I think people develop a tolerance to it, and they don't like the anxiety they experience when the effects wear off, backlash anxiety or not. When one is used to it, abrupt withdrawal can even cause seizures. I remember forgetting to take klonopin for a day or two and feeling terribly uncomfortable. I can only imagine what it's like to discontinue a benzo when you're taking lots of it.
The problem with this particular benzo is it's fairly short half-life, it acts quickly, leaves fairly quickly (so you notice when it's not there-'oh, I want to take more')
I hope your friend is careful.

I hope he's careful, too...

I found some info on the 'net and casually put in conversation that he should be careful to watch out for the depression that it can cause...

Hopefully he'll WANT to stop when he starts getting depressed...

I'll just have to keep checking in on him, I guess.

Don't you sometimes wish that you didn't care so much??? It's just so hard to want to help and know that you can't make decisions for anyone but yourself...

Sorry to butt in, but this isn't your ex, is it? If so, yes, it's part of the old pattern. Xanax can be very addictive.
sorry for butting in, but I was worried,

Yes, you can drive yourself crazy trying to take care of others. And then we end up hurting ourselves becasue we actually have little control over anohter person. Its so frustrating! Try not to get too involved, give the info and then back away a bit. They need to figure it out themselves. did i just say all that?

control freak rain who is very insistent upon wanting things her way :-)

I have given my friend all the info I am going to- and I refuse to let myself get all worked up over this.

Thanks for the info- and thank goodness it's not my ex-h, though he was drinking and maintaining with Xanax when he was drinking...

Ex's not drinking or abusing anything else, thank goodness!
