well I know a little....
xanax is a benzodiazepine, an antianxiety med- lovely, effective, and fairly quick acting to calm you down. I've taken it before, but not more than a single pill at a time. I imagine it's a quite peaceful, "chilled out" sort of high. I've taken up to three benzo pills-ativan specifically (whatever the mgs were) at a time before and that was my experience (really I just mainly fall asleep). It is very possible to be addicted to xanax. This drug ends up being abused by a lot of people. I think people develop a tolerance to it, and they don't like the anxiety they experience when the effects wear off, backlash anxiety or not. When one is used to it, abrupt withdrawal can even cause seizures. I remember forgetting to take klonopin for a day or two and feeling terribly uncomfortable. I can only imagine what it's like to discontinue a benzo when you're taking lots of it.
The problem with this particular benzo is it's fairly short half-life, it acts quickly, leaves fairly quickly (so you notice when it's not there-'oh, I want to take more')
I hope your friend is careful.
