Hello there, I have been taking Effexor XR (150mg per day) for probably over a month now...(I had been taking Wellbutrin and Celexa before, but am off both now as they seemed to have lost their effect). I do smoke pot about once a week and I have also tried taking mushrooms a few times. I was just wondering what kind of interaction or effect the Effexor has with both the THC and the shrooms. When I smoke pot I still get high.. but the last time I tried shrooms it felt as though they had almost no effect on me if any. Is the Effexor causing this?
Also, it should be noted that the doses of mushrooms I have taken in the past are 2 grams, then 3 or 3.5 once or twice, then only 2 or 2.5 this last time. However, I wouldn't think it's the dose because I definitely tripped when I took only 2 grams my first time.. then again, maybe my body needs more to have the same effect now.. I don't know, so any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I can't really help you, but I have a friend who says Effexor lessens the effects of MDMA.

Hey. How long did you leave it before taking some more mushrooms? If it was less than a couple of days then your next lot will have a reduced effect. Other than that I think the effects of mushies can vary a bit. I have had a couple of LSD tabs where the effect didn't really seem to kick in (sometimes pot helps) but others from the same batch were fine. And sometimes mushrooms are intense and othertimes they just distort a bit so you can't figure whether anything seems different or not...
I don't think effexor affects them, but maybe I didn't take it for long enough to discover that...

Thanks for the help guys.
Alexandra, I think this actually was the only time where I took the shrooms within a few days of the previous time.. and also the only time i didn't smoke pot with it. Also, you said you didn't take it for long enough to find out.. did you mean that you take effexor and have taken shrooms too and not noticed an effect?

I have found that SSRI's negate the effect of MDMA, for some reason they don't let them work and I have friends that have had the same effect. Maybe it just blocks the psychotropic pathways. I don't why though?

If you take an SSRI before taking MDMA it will reduce the effect. Taking an SSRI as you come down from MDMA might have a neuroprotective effect. I wonder though if this is true of the psychedelics.
That's what I've heard.

I took 300mg effexor for years and took 4gm of shrooms dried and they tripped fine. However, I was told a lower dose 2 or 2.5 should cause me to trip also. I tried with no sucess.

Hey thanks everyone for your help.. I was also wondering if anyone knows if Effexor also has any effect on marijuana... it seems like I've been smoking more that usual to get the same high.

All SSRIs will drastically decrease your ability to "trip". I am not qualified what so ever, and no studies I know of have been done. But from personal experience and reading, I know factually SSRIs will greatly inhibit the desired effects of the popular hallucinagens. I have a guess as to why this is the case. Psilocybin (most active compound in mushrooms) unleashes a quite abnormal amount of seretonin in the brain. This is what makes you trip in fact. SSRIs, as you know, stop the reuptake of seretonin in the brain, keeping levels high. I surmise, especially for those on higher dosages of SSRIs, this is why "tripping" becomes more difficult if not impossible. Basically, the brain is already flooded with seretonin, and most importantly it is quite use to it. If you take effexor you know how you must titrate up to desired dosage; you just can't start popping 300mgs (i bet it would be quite uncomfortable if you did). With all that serotonin in the brain already, there is not a neurological "shock" that most receive after eating mushrooms. It is like pooring water into an already full cup; it just runs down the side and goes nowhere. I am fairly sure this is the case with most hallucinagens. There may be some hallucinagens that don't cuase their desired affects through the process of seretonin flooding, I don't know. If anyone does, please post. As far as the common hallucinagens (lsd, psilosybin, mescalin, mdma), I am quite certain SSRIs inhibit their effects greatly. And depending on your dosage of SSRI, it may make the hallucingen ineffective completely.
Marijuana doesn't work this way, and from personal experience again, SSRIs do not affect the way the brain processes THC. It shouldn't greatly alter your ability to get "high".

Since starting the Affexor, I actually crave pot now. I used to be happy with a couple of hits at bedtime so I could get 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I noticed in the mornings there was such an "edge", that I had to smoke in order not to accidentally hurt people. In two weeks this has now become an all-day need. And pot is not addictive!! Any thoughts?
Note: I was on Strattera for a year, until two weeks ago, and I was a meth addict for two years.
This is the end of the thread.
