Look back at me from the mirror every morning. I never remember going to bed anymore, if I even go. And each morning I try and piece the evening together. All the while I'm staring at my puffy eyes with dark rings under them. And later on, I'll start all over again.

Sabrina, my heart aches for you. I've spent a lot of time researching this situation, and would like to give two URLs that may be helpful. When someone is using alcohol like that, as a drug, rather than simply for the fun of being drunk, that is a problem.
First, http://www.nattc.org/asme/details.asp?ID=0402d explains that is genetic trait I've mentioned how some misprocess GABA, and if alcohol is used to self-medicate, can become alcoholics.
Another link that explains some of the brain chemistry issues is: http://webpages.charter.net/rfhale/alcohol.htm
The archives of this board have many discussions about the wisdom of giving benzos to those who may be alcoholic, or prone to drug abuse, but unless the GABA situation is corrected, nothing else is likely to help.

I looked at a stranger for years, he looked nasty, his eyes were dark and puffy and he was desperate.. In a strange way I liked him, a line of charley and a few more voddies and he was the sinister king with the eyes of pure evil.. I don't see him much these days, but he's always around, waiting.. I'm in control now, he pops up after a few beers but without the vodka and coke he is nothing, just a reflection.

Alcoholics are genetically disadvantaged in about 80% od cases. They have comprisomised gaba systems as countless studies have shown, yet benzos, much safer, effective and relatively harmless, arent even mentioned as a treatment, because they are addictive. Well, thats true, but so is alcohol. And a hell of a lot more addictive, and a hell of a lot more detrumental, and a hell of a lot easier to get ahold of. i agree with the post that in many alcoholics will never get better unless gaba prob. is fixed. And Im afraid that the medical system isnt going to suggest benzos any time soon. Its up to you. Fight for it, even if others disagree.

Thank you. I read these two links with as much interest as my limited scientific propensity will allow.
I can see that the GABA situation should be corrected buy have missed a way on how to do this?

Hi Struggle
I know you said you have been reading for a while, but I don't recall you posting.
I have found a good deal of support here and on the social board. It is good to know that I am not alone with this affliction or whatever else we could call it. I feel very alone with it, especially since I am fiercely hiding it from those I love. It calms me to come here and find someone else is feeling the same guilt.
Hoping that you will receive some comfort too and feel free to post and post and post.
Sabrina
