Laughing Gas...

Posted by alexandra_k on September 10, 2004, at 19:47:10

Nitrous Oxide (however you spell it). It is legal. You can buy it in these cream whippers (one cannister whips a litre of cream if you have the cream whipper). But you can capture the gas in a balloon, and boy do ya feel good :-)

I don't think it is harmful to you either, it is medical quality, and unless you overdo it so you faint and hit your head on something on the way down, well, to the best of my knowledge that is about the worst that can happen to you.

Anyone else made this discovery???

Yep, it called whipits (sp?). They always have it at raves. I have to admit it is my favorite. It makes you feel so-o-o good. But I'm not sure it isn't harmful to you. And I know at the raves they always hide it if cops come in, so I don't know if its completely legal. I actually had a hallucinatory experience once after smoking pot first. Everything people said to me appeared written out in bubbles like in the comics. I remember saying, wait, I can't read what your saying. Surely that can't be healthy.

Aaah, yes. There is a situation where you can get 'herbal suppliments' etc from the dairy (7-11) which are perfectly legal until someone OD's; or attempts to drive while they are high or whatever and then the substance gets banned. At the moment there is the taurine, gurana, caffene buzzy thing which (if you have enough) is quite like p or speed.

I think that E was legal here (nz) for a while. Not so very many years back. Then it was a class B drug offence until people started getting into it at raves, dancing too hard out without drinking enough water, and then they go and die of dehydration: and so it is bumped up to Class A (which means you are put away for a verrrry long time for an absolutely pitiful amount which wouldn't even fulful personal usage for a year).

I also hallucinate on nos. That is what I like about it (we get awesome mushroom seasons in the fall). And I smoke a bit of weed at times...

I would be interested to know if it is harmful, however. I mean, I appreciate that there is always a risk of psychological damage and / or addiction to hallucinogens, but to the best of my knowledge acid is one substance (along with dope) that you cannot OD on. I guess I was thinking that the oxide in the nitrus may be enough to make sure you don't faint, but then I have heard of people wacking their heads on the furniture on the way down.

Thanks for your thoughts :-)

Nitrous can have a few health problems Aside from the obvious dangers of falling through a glass table or sufficating to death because you pass out with a mask attached to your head etc.

Long term use can lead to vitamin B-12 depleation. I think you have to be doing over 200 whip-its a week for a month or so to this be a problem. Obviously, if you already aren't getting enough B-12 in your diet, then it will be worse for you. On the other side, I have heard people taking B-12 suppliment pills to counter it.

The more alarming problem is if you are on if for more than a few hours. I think this does permanent genetic damage or something.

At one point, I was doing around 100 whip-its a day, for about 2 weeks. No permanent damage, I don't think. Certinaly not something I'd recommend. Also hard on the wallet ;)

Thankyou. I had no idea. I don't use anywhere near that much - and I don't attach a mask to my face (just inhale from a balloon so the worst that can happen is you faint and let go and the gas escapes).

Cheers for the info :-)

The main danger with nitrous use is hypoxia (too little oxygen). This happens because most recreational users only inhale nitrous, as opposed to medically used nitrous which is delivered in conjunction with oxygen. Even if you mix the gas with air, you're still at a risk of not getting enough oxygen. This usually isn't serious enough to have a lethal effect, although it still may cause damage.

If I remember correctly, nitrous oxide is an NMDA antagonist (like the dissociative drugs ketamine, dextromethorphan, etc.). This may make heavy users susceptible to ill-effects associated with dissociative abuse including NMDA-antagonist neurotoxicity ("Olney's lesions" and the like).

There are surely dangers that I've missed (another poster already mentioned b12 pernicious anemia), so do your homework if you're going to continue using.

peace in the middle east, yo.

Cheers for that. Found out that dental nurses reckon that they have reduced fertility too...
