Hi, I'm 22, and Bipolar, and an Alcoholic/Drug Addict. I recently quit drugs (pain pills, muscle relaxers/coke/X/). I still drink everyday and smoke weed just about everyday. But at least I quit with the hard drugs. Went to the Dentist today and had a root canal done. Doc then gave me a prescription for extra strenght Vicodin 750 mg. And I sitting here starring at the little white paper that's my ticket to relapsing. The pain is terrible and my mouth is killing me. But I know once I take one of those V's everything is going to come crashing down. Any advice???

Hi
The Dentist can give you a long acting shot that will last for 18 hours or linger. It is related to Novicaine.
Hope it's not too late....but I would call your dentist now and have him give you a shot. Waking him up is a small price to pay for staying clean. tell him
My hubby is a dentist....too bad you don't live near us.

advil, dude. I've had a doctor tell me that for short periods of time (on the order of a few days) you can take up to 16 ibuprofen tablets per day (4 every 6 hours). Concurrently, you can take tylenol (which is in the vicodin). Best to stay away from the vicodin.

You can also call the dentist and ask for a script for 800 or 600 mg tablets of ibuprofin. I cannot take vicoden because it makes me supersick and after I had major surgery, I found out that the ibuprofin did a much better job at controlling my pain anyway.
Good luck,

Please, please, do not give in to your addiction. I dont know your history other than what you posted on this thread but so you had no will power this time around. But next time you are going to be prepared, right? Trust me, I know what you went thru before you put those pills in your mouth. I too, will soon have to face that decision for the same reason. But am trying o prepare myself for dealing w/te pain & handing over the script over to my husband to rip up(vicodins) before I do something I will regret.
But I hope you are now back in the saddle and on your way to a clean & sober future. One slip up, due to alot of pain(I have a very low tolerance to pain, as well) should not make you dodge your sobriety. So please just think about it, if you are not already back on the road to recovery. Lani :)

i just had my wisdom teeth removed last week and i was prescribed 10mg oxycodone pills. being an opiate addict i had to face a real decisian and i ended up having my pops distribute the pills to me as directed. anyway i only had 4 days worth (because my dentest knew of my addiction) and i did fine. i did however have incresed cravings for smack, i kept myself in check. Now its been about a week scince my last pill and im back to usual. my dentest said "this is what these medicines are used for and you will soon know why"
anyway man, dont feel guilty about using those vicoden, if you didnt abuse them then you used them for their intended purpose. Its almost laughable that AA/NA preaches never using pain medicine after surgery, but dont feel allowed to take them if your sore or whatever....thats diffrent then strait out of the operating room.
anyway man im fighting the addiction also and us addicts need to support eachother.

Greetings:
I suggest Orudis for pain, it's much, much stonger than advil, but is over the counter and non addictive. For my back pain, it is more effective than vicodin.
See the movie "Requiem For A Dream". Watch it intently, even by yourself, so there are no distractions.
As you continue to ween yourself from drugs, like weed and alcohol, you will feel like you don't know what to do with yourself. Even just a little weed and booze makes a boring evening seem interesting, or at least tolerable.
So what can replace the weed and alcohol? Try literature, or poetry, such as Keats. Why do you think General Patton read poetry? Because it gave him the strength to love life. Or read up on something you may have always wanted to "get into" but didn't have the time. So you replace the drugs and partying with education. I find it an effective antidote.
Don't let "IT" win.

Maybe I,ve been out of the loop too long or something, but when these situations arise(and they do,often)the prescribing Dr./Dentist can write for Nalaxone or Talwin(Opiate-Antagonists).Festus

I was a daily user/abuser of opiates for a few years . I used bupe to get off . Less than a month after taking my last bupe dose , I broke a rib. I was in severe pain . I went to er after about three days of it not getting better. I waited three days in hopes of the pain going away . The er prescribed some vics and 800 mg motrin(ibuprofen) . I did not get the script for the vics filled . This injury was quite painfull. Ever time I breathed rolled over while trying to sleep, bent down or just slightly twisted in anyway I would feel sharp pain. When I started the bupe I asked the counseler what would remedy this type of problem . One suggestion was to let wife moniter usage. But he suggested abstinece first . Well I was in alot of pain and the motrin worked somewhat . After a few days of what seemed like the injury got worse because I went back to work right away and also had my 5 year old nephew jump right on my side. I felt I could use the stuff responsibly. I did have somewhat of a debate with my wife. long story short I was taking the pills as pescribed . I did not feel a tinge of high. When I was using I never really used vics caus I have to take too many to get a buzz. I assume I still had tolerance but I cant remeber when a couple vics did the trick. This medication is a godsend for real pain . I have only used pain killers a few times for this purpose but took it for granted. When I went to primary doc for follow up he asked if I needed some pain killers ,loratabs , I told him I had some of the others left and did not need them . I only took them for a few days and only 2-3 times a day. I am very proud of myself. It was also a test to see of sorts to the old adage once you use you are back to your old ways automaticaly. Dont beleive it . I lived for opiates . I was able to take them responsibley. For me I was always reminding myself of the end of the road. I have thought about that everyday. I think it would be nice to do any oxy. I would probaly get off like when I started. But then what???????????? Thats the scary part . Would I be able to do it just once???? Sometimes I think I can. I dont wanna know . At least not now. The vics I used for a legit purpose and I had no problem stopping . I was hopping to get a little buzz though I didnt . If I did not have the support of my wife I might have misused them I dont know.. I didnt think I would have got anymore when they were gone though . The oxys I would be using to get high and no other reason.

good job SO FAR, I have always felt the same, tryed to express this theory on another re-hab board and got blasted to hell. i have been off the Vics for three months now, still coming off the sub though, I think I read too many horror stories on this other site and WD from sub is something I still relate to WD from opiates. Anyway, I am still coming off them very slow, but i really wanted to feel a back to normal completeness before I attempted it, I do have that feeling now, working again etc, feel good all in all. I think I too could use a VIC if I had to, my hubby has a small Rx of them in the house and not once have I tryed to find them. I am glad you got through this, I think there is alot of preconceived "rules" addicts make up for addicts to follow, maybe its some form of jealousy i dont know, but I thnk a strong mind is all you need ONCE DETOXED, its like changing a form of fuel. Anyhoo, good luck, stay on path.Arrie
