LOOSING IT ON ADDERALL!

Posted by TRACYANDDEANA on December 5, 2003, at 10:57:23

HI,
I AM 33 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING ADDERAll FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS. AT FIRST IT WAS A WONDERFUL DRUG FOR ME. IT OPENED SO MANY DOORS AND I REALIZED SO MANY THINGS ABOUT MYSELF AND MY LIFE THAT I NEVER REALIZED BEFORE; HOWEVER, I FEEL THAT THIS DRUG IS NOW MAKING ME PARANOID AND WEIRD.IT IS LIKE MY PERSONALITIY IS GONE, I AM DEPPRESSED, AND IT SEEMS LIKE I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF ANYMORE. WITH OUT IT I DONT FEEL LIKE DOING ANYTHING BUT SLEEP, AND I AM AFRAID THAT IF I STOP TAKING THE ADDERRALL I WILL GO BACK TO MY VERY IMPULSIVE, AND DISTRUCTIVE BAHAIVIOR; ALTHOUGH,THE ADDERRALL THAT HELPED ME BECOME LESS IMPULSIVE, AND THAT HELPED ME BECOME ALL THE THINGS THAT IT USED TO HELP ME WITH, IS NOT HELPING VERY MUCH ANYMORE. IT IS ALMOST LIKE IT IS MAKING ME WORSE IN THOSE ISSUE AREAS OF MINE. I AM VERY AWEAR OF MY STRANGE BEHAIVIOR, BUT I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO.I NEED SOME KIND OF DIRECTION ON WHERE TO GO FROM HERE. I AM AFRAID TO TELL MY DOCTOR, BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT HIM TO JUST TAKE THE ADDERALL AWAY.I DO NEED SOMETHING ELSE THOUGH. I AM AFRAID IT IS MAKING ME CRAZY AND I WANT TO BE MY OLD SELF AGAIN. IF I CAN REMEMBER WHO MY OLD SELF IS!

I don't know much about Adderal but I am convinced that it is possible to develop a tolerance to some psychotropic medications. At the time I complained that my Paxil, which was wonderful for me for a couple years, seemed to have failed me, I was informed that I must be mistaken because there were no data showing that it lost its effectiveness in some people. Now the "poop out" phenomenon of SSRI's is known to most practitioners.

It's possible you're experiencing a similar poop-out with Adderal, whether this is a known phenomenon or not. If you do tell your doctor and s/he does no more than take you off Adderal, you really ought to consider if that is the doctor you want to keep. I would expect either some tests to see if there is some underlying physical cause for my change or an experiment with a new medication, possibly both but not necessarily at the same time.

It's miserable to have something that really improved your life at one time fail you--I know because that's what happened to me. I have never found anything as completely satisfactory as my first treatment but I must say I'm in much better condition now than I was while I was still in the slump from Paxil poop-out.

Good luck to you. I hope something I've said here helps.

I can relate with what you are going through,I,ve felt the same way many times about stimulant therapy.I take Dexedrine(settled on it after trial runs with Ritalin and Adderrall)and it has a remarkable effect on my thinking and getting things done.I have ADD and ,I also have to take Methadone for Chronic Pain. The Methadone helps control pain very well and cheaply, too, but it makes your head feel like a brick, heavy and thick.Coupled with ADD,I can,t hardly get nuthin done without the Dex.Even so,it,s still a double -edge sword to me.After a long trial-and-error period,I,ve found that the best way for me to go,is 3 weeks on,then,1 week off.If I do it this way,I don,t tend to get so fried on the Dexedrine that it starts working adversely, like the Adderrall is doin to you.I tried takin it every day and after 4-5 months,I started getting angry and short after taking the first days dose.I tried different things and realized that the 3 on,1 off,was the best I could hope for. That 1 week off is not much fun,but the 3 on are quality and it keeps me from gettin burnt out on it.Just an idea.Festus

Try using NDMA antagonists. Do a search on google "amphetamine tolerance NDMA site:dr-bob.org"
