Alcohol and craving sweets.....help?

Posted by EmmyS on December 6, 2003, at 19:35:50

When I try to give up alcohol, the craving for sweets is overwhelming. I will soon be the size of a small barn. Does anyone know if meds which are supposed to help eliminate alcohol cravings will help with this problem?

Quitting is supposed to make me healthier - My liver is happier, but my heart will stop beating pretty soon!! Emmy

LOL emmy...unfortunately when we try to give up our drug of choice, something has to take over. chocolate is probably the best way to go. it is not unlike quitting smoking. the cravings for sweets are only there for a couple of months. after that you can deal with you weight gain, if any. don't worry about the weight gain right now, you are concentrating on something else. best to get that in control first. one step at a time, and don't forget your metabolism will adjust eventually. lots of exercise can not only help with the alchohol withdrawl, but help with the weight gain. nothing good happens overnight. give it time...best of luck...

Eat the sweets, then throw them up.

That was a joke...a dark one. I'm just in that kind of mood.

I hate wrestling my biology; I feel imprisoned by it. And sometimes I just feel like showing it who's boss.

The humor is the Indian in me. The more desperate the issue, the more likely I am to joke about it, and in dark terms.

bsj and krazybirdlady,

I think the both of you would be wise to join in on the administrative conversation going on about this very thing! Please do chime in if you feel like it.

Thanks.

Please don't suggest that others harm themselves, even if joking, thanks.

I'll respect your rules, but I will say that if we've gone so far that we can't joke about bad things, we're in real trouble. Come to think of it, yeah, we are. How many good jokes have you heard about suicide lately?

Effexor killed my craving for sweets. Stuff just tasted bland.

I guess it's just a bit funny that I am already on effexor!

I just started Topamax, and went to my first AA meeting tonight. That surely means I'm almost cured,
no? ;-)

Good for you. I'll bet those apple pies were 1) cheaper than 2) easier on your body that and 3) fewer calories than the booze you would've consumed in five days.
