hi. i'm an addict (mostly pot but also coke and alcohol). i went to n.a. for four years 12 years ago and i have no interest in going back. but i made a decision with my friend and my therapist to quit drugs on monday. i really don't want to go to meetings. but i do need some kind of structure/support. does anyone have any suggestions (other than just telling me to go to a 12-step program, which i'm really not open to).i appreciate any words of wisdom.

Hi.. I am on the same boat as you. I do not wish to attend AA or NA meetings. They did nothing for me. Kinda boring. I have a bad drinking problem which leads to pills and cocaine. Im a mess. 22 days ago I decided that its time to stop, and I have to do it on my own. I had a positive attitude.. I was strong and I felt great for those 22 days. Until last night.. I went to a race care event and there was beer everywhere... I fell off the wagon :( I over drank too.. and i took a pill. I feel like crap right now so bad. My breathing is bad... im having panic/anxiety attacks like crazy. I was gonna go to the ER but you know how that goes... better off staying home and suffering. We are human.. and we all make mistakes. I am going back on my wagon again... And hopefully I can go another 22 days without drinking. Shoot... I wish that i Never drink again.
Anyways.. I wish you luck and praise you on your decision to quit!

Hi...well I commend your bravado. But, you of course realize that quitting cold turkey could bring about some serious health issues. (Both physical and mental.) I highly suggest Detox...asap. You need to be monitored and in a safe place while "coming down".
After Detox, you may find better support in a 28 day program, one that emphasizes major lifestyle changes, and can help get your psychiatric issues under control. You may very likely need medication for that. I imagine there has to be some non-profit ones (28 day treatment centers) where you live, and if you don't know of any, please call your local hospital for information on such. Besides helping with medications, the 28 day program will help with everything from nutrition to communication assertiveness, as well as how to majorly reduce stress in your life. They are very complete, well-rounded programs. You will have a daily activity plan/schedule to follow by, which helps with the discipline of a structured day.
Anyhow...best wishes...and please keep us posted...and any further questions, etc..
Sincerely,
Jay

Way to go, Crush! :-) I felt for you when you posted you were quitting, but I didn't respond because I've never used drugs and wouldn't know the first thing about how hard it is to quit. I didn't want to say something stupid....
But I can *imagine* it would be really, really tough, so I'm sending good vibes your way and wish you the best. :-)
Take care,
Susan

Just wanted to let y'all know that i'm still clean. it's been almost two weeks now with no drugs including alcohol. it's been really great. i'm very happy about it and feeling solid. it can be done (even without a twelve-step program)!

Congrats! Never forget where you came from though. If you forget how bad it was, you might go back. Best of Luck to you!

I'm doing really well, thanks for asking. I haven't touched a drug (including alcohol) since Dec. 1st, and on Jan. 1st I quit smoking cigarettes, too. I kinda used cigs to replace the drugs for awhile so I was smoking WAY too much. But now I'm off those, too, and sick as a dog (I think from quitting) but I feel STRONG. SOLID. It's really cool.
Yesterday, I found two coke-caked straws in my couch and had a moment where I really wanted to scrape and snort them, but instead I threw them in the garbage.
I'm drinking lots of water and writing a lot and cooking and eating and playing guitar. Watching TV. I also don't have a job so I have lots of free time (which is both good and bad, I suppose, but you'd think it would make quitting drugs especially hard -- actually, it's the reason I quit -- because I didn't have anything to stop me from using all the time).
This is the end of the thread.
