I have to defend in a week

Posted by LlurpsieNoodle on April 19, 2007, at 20:21:05

I hope they like my work.
I'm trying to do a little bit everyday on the powerpoint presentation.

I'm terrified that they will ask me to make major revisions to my document, which is due in about 4 weeks. I don't know if I can sustain happy good thoughts for the next 4 weeks.

And my advisor... she is incredibly supportive one minute and then cuts me down to shreds the next. I never know what to expect with her.

One thing is certain. sleeping and eating are necessary to defending. The sleeping I've got down. the eating part (and staying hydrated... now that I think about it) are struggles.

ugh.

Ll,

the one thing i know about defenses is that they're a hoop. nothing compares to the amount of work you've put into the diss. that's the important part. also (at least in my field) the diss doesn't indicate the end of your work, which is so much more vast and important and relevant than a final document and a defense. the defense isn't the heart of your degree.

more like a marathon...which is really nothing compared to all the training and conditioning you invested in to get to that point. right?

and...GOOD LUCK!!

take care,
philyra

i know it's a flaming hoop. i just read your posts on psych. ugh. how incredibly frustrating.

anyway, i just wanted you to know that when i say it's a hoop i know it's not a candy-colored one.

take care,
philyra

Thanks Philyra,
I scheduled a real meeting with my advisor and I have a chance to practice my talk the day before in front of a group, so that will help me. a bitter vitamin, but it will help.

best to you,
Ll

Hi Li,

Keep your defenses up when you defend, so to speak and I'm positive you'll do great.

I've got my fingers crossed for you.

I finished the powerpoint today. 60 slides. that's all. a nice even number. lots of pretty slides.

not too many words. that's not nice. they come to hear a talk. not read a book.

I know I'm not ready yet though. I need to make a plan.

here's my plan

monday- read through my entire dissertation and try to be as cruel to myself as possible (not a problem) and try to figure out what the weakest parts are. what they will pick up on. what I'm concealing, what I shine the spotlight on and why

tuesday. reread all of my literature review notes, and write 3 new ones. one on a paper I never really read, but SHOULD HAVE. one on a paper recently written by (a student of) someone on my comittee. one on a paper I've read a dozen times and forgotten a dozen times.

Also, I'm going to give the powerpoint lecture to my cat. I hope he likes it

Wednesday I have a practice run in lab meeting. (BARF)

Thursday. Thursday Thursday.

Ijust want it to be over. but actually thursday means more work. I will need to do all the crap they want me to do. but but but... my mind hates changing my writing. I'd rather burn it than reconsider it.

that's my thoughts for today.

I'm feeling queasy already...

If all goes well, I should be Dr. LlurpsieNoodle by later this evening.

If all doesn't go well... well. I'm still going to go out to dinner with my friends.

best,
Ll

Woohoohoo! Jumping up and down for you. What a marvelous accomplishment. I know you worked so long and hard for this, through many trials and tribs. It's well-earned, and I am very happy and proud for you. I'm inspired and awed.

Congratulations.
