What happened to this place?
I remember addressing the American Psychiatric Association meeting in Toronto, a few years ago, when I said during Dr. Bob's Psychobabble presentation that the people on Psychobabble had done more for me than the psychiatric care that I had received. In a room full of psychiatrists, that was heresy.
I have never wavered from that belief.
What happened to Babble? What happened to Dr. Bob?

Dr. Bob just kind of disappeared. He must be "around" in some capacity, since someone is keeping the technical aspects of this functioning.
As to what happened to a lot of the posters....My sense is that most left when Dr. Bob was still involved in response to truly ugly and angry disputes that I never really understood. Partly about his tolerance of Lou, but there was more to it than that. So lot's of people left and then Dr. Bob left and then people drifted off.
The psych and social board are pretty much dead. The medication board is still fairly active and generally interesting except when Lou chimes in which, by the way, is less frequent than in used to be. He'll be active for a few days, then dormant for a few weeks. The last few days, he's been active.

i think alot of people have left, and alot of the deputies are no longer here, dr-bob is not here much either.....
yes babble used to be more psychiatric-doctor oriented discussing medications, but it kinda lost it's previous posting styles
yes i know, i've posted some things that make this site not look professional, apologize for that....but maybe rebooting it and getting more people to come back.....would be a plan, i don't know where dr-bob is....he's not been here for quite some time.....
maybe it could be rebooted and bring back the zest, babble kinda ... it's became a support group, but still we do have good references on questions but the style has changed from previous decade

Hey.
I concur. Psychobabble has helped me much more than I can ever hope to express.
I think that people left as Dr Bob reduced his input here.
I think that Dr Bob reduced his input here as he moved to retirement.
I don't quite know... But how old is he now? How many years was he working for the University of Chicago? How many years was he on call, fairly much 24/7 for us?
He was there in the early days of health informatics. Look how far it's come...
We were all a part of that...
Nowdays... Pharmaceutical companies know to get information from doctors about who they trust for prescribing information... To pay those people to deliver advertisement/information for the company at conference... No, that's early days, things have moved beyond that...
(Think about how people would trust the advice of certain 'trusted posters' on the meds board)
It's a kind of consumer research...
No, it's beyond that...
Dr Bob did early market research on how consumers felt about google ads... How much would people pay / donate to not have google ads?? Would people give their credit card information to participate in Babble?
Remember all of this...
Dr Bob was a pioneer...
A visionary.
And in exchange... Yeah, I got the best care I'll ever get. And to be a part of that...
The internet's all ruined now... Every 13 year old paying hundreds of dollars for their government surveillance device... Giving away more than everything corporations / non-profits where any 'profits' are directly channeled to boards of directors ever did...
Find something we'd like to do but costs money.
Solution: Get people to pay for the privaledge of doing that for us.In NZ... You don't give away health information (such that foreign corporations can profit from the information. That's yesterdays realisation. What you do is you make health providers pay for using the software that enables you to compile data on which start up / small provider is making most profits such as you can ID them to buy them out swiftly...
Or similar.
Dr Bob... Has served his working life... Methinks.
I don't suppose we can complain...
I'm learning / thinking about 'complicit'. What that is / means. Not for Bob... FOr me... Just generally... It's better than ranting about profiteering (as I've become wont to do)... Anatomy major (currently). Physiology lurking in the vicinity... Why use tissue that's been donated by people who have given informed consent... Why do that... Most especially when you can totally obtain ethics board approval to make and kill for purpose a bunch of critters whom no rational being would decide to be...
Sigh.
in other news... Why can't biochemists talk in paragraphs? Sentences? Or even.... WOrds? Whats up with the code of letters with no key??????
You have to be a physiologist to think that providing an equation with no key of symbols is an academically reputable thing to do. No physicist....
I'm sorry this is kind of garbled...
Do you remember that Dr Bob had this thing about the move from autocracy to democracy... Different forms of government... I think he genuinely did try and make a go of how Babble might survive beyond him...
I thought that insofar as a leader... Dinah... If anyone had the... Public support to pull that off... It was Dinah... But she didn't want to do it without Bob... (No judgement). He tried with a bigger group... It went kinda pear shaped...
Babble's still here.
I think that the more people put in... The more other people put in...
Larry Hoover is remembered. The name means something. If Larry Hoover were to put thought / time / effort into Babble posts... If posters could feel fairly confident that if they posted they would get a positive response... Posting numbers / the amounts of 'genuine' / 'genuinely vulnerable' / potentially meaningful interactions would increase...
It's basically...
Up to us.
I don't know that I'm capable of...
Well... Anything, really. I get like a dog with a bone sometimes. Or like a pit bull with a target... Which is sort of my virtue and my vice...
Not entirely prosocial...
Or something...

but of course a physicist would not explain their math. i suppose it comes down to different background assumptions.
i remember the (hopeless) enterprise of attempting a thesis/article/project/essay/paragraph without making ANY assumptions.
you never get started.

In the beginning there was Descartes. In his oven room. And Descartes observed that when he put his candle into the oven flames then the candle would change shape. But it's substance had not altered - there was no more nor less of it.
And then Descartes observed that....

biochemists should use their words ffs.
oh yes indeed, he surely did.
sigh.
(i am oh so not going to fail - and / or get below 90%)
sigh.
use your words - and / or *explain* your flow diagram somewhat sorta semi overlaid onto actual human (or other organism (ymmv - see galen) anatomy) situation...
luck with that...

aaaaw.
i'm very keen to learn what the US department of defence wants to know when they fund 'connectome'. I bet it isn't 'face recog' (I mean my phone promises to do that - and with my login details that it requires it doesn't even need to)...

Fair enough. I don't really know what happened with the deputies (including Dinah). I suppose everyone has their own version of events...
I do remember power struggles with the deputies (including Dinah) at times wishing that Dr Bob would take less of an active role (not block certain things) and at times wishing that Dr Bob would take more of an active role (blocking certain other things).
He certainly didn't seem keen on the deputies (including Dinah) having more say in what would or would not be blocked and for how long... At least, at times. Ha.
Glad you are still here, by the way.

Nice to see you too.
To be clear about the departure of the deputies, it was not a power struggle but a personal safety issue.
For example: the deputies give of their free time and are unpaid for their work here. Suppose someone personally threatens them on this forum, with say, physical or legal action.
Who is responsible for the safety of the deputies?
That's something to consider.
It kept me from wanting to resume a role. But this is also conjecture...this is my perception of the situation. I can't say there were many times we were all able to chat with each other at the same time with Dr Bob. I don't see any reason for being the woman behind the curtain here.

I have other chronic health issues than those that would literally be within the domain of this website, and sometimes I get quite overwhelmed. I know enough to adjust my inputs/outputs, and to keep my productivity at the forefront. I'm one tiny cog in an international scientific effort to develop nuclear reactors that simply cannot melt down like Fukishima or blow up like Chernobyl.
All those electric cars that peeps dream of driving have to be powered somehow.

> Hi, Larry.
>
> I'm glad you are contributing to a movement towards safer nuclear energy. For clarity, the Generation IV nuclear reactors have a design characteristic of being passive fail-safe. What that means is that no mechanical or human interactions are required to render the reactor safe under any adverse event.
Three Mile Island was a twice-over human failure. The staff were inadequately trained to deal with an emergency, and the equipment was inadequately maintained to respond to an emergency. When the primary water coolant system failed, the backup cooling pump was not triggered in time, and it did not work when it was finally actuated.
Chernobyl was entirely a human-caused tragedy, in that drunken staff at the two reactors "played chicken" by seeing how unstable they could make their respective reactors, until thermal changes made it impossible to exert control once more by inserting control rods to bring them back under control. The actions of the reactor staff were expressly forbidden and contrary to their training.
At Fukishima, a similar reactor to that at Three Mile Island, the back up coolant pump was diesel-powered, but located at the same level as the nuclear plant. The tsunami wave that cut the grid power to the main cooling system also swamped the backup power supply. Engineers had argued for elevating the backup generators, but accountants had argued for cost-savings by locating the generators adjacent to the plant. Another human error, IMHO.
These three reactors were Generation II reactors. The ones I'm working on are Generation IV designs. A Chinese pebble bed reactor of this engineering level has successfully passed a Loss Of Coolant Incident (LOCI). The reactor simply went to sleep when the helium gas (inert) coolant was intentionally stopped. The reactor actually performed better than the engineers expected, shutting down at a lower temperature, and more quickly than the computer models had predicted.
A commercial scale Chinese pebble bed reactor is expected to go into service in late 2017.
There are small modular versions of the pebble bed design expected to go into testing within a few years. The advantage of these new designs is that they can be installed virtually anywhere, allowing for the development of a distributed power network. Reactors will not only produce electricity, but can also produce hydrogen (fuel cells?), and heat for industrial and domestic applications.
I think that small modular nuclear reactors are the future of humankind, but that's just my opinion.

Hola Mi Amigo!you write:
>> Sorry that I keep disappearing.
I think I'm keeping up with you on the 'disappearing'.
>> I find my interactions with the Pilderbeast quite challenging.
Cripes All Gautama!! I swear! I have been tying my neurons (both of them!) in knots trying to figure which arcane literature or what flavor of scriptural reference this was: I MEAN for Hours! Just now, only (finally!) Just Now did my CNS crash into this absurdly obvious, right-in-front-of-me, totally-unavoidable reference. My ears are ringing from the impact. I have theories about this kind of blindness. Another time.
Anyway, I don't have those interactions so I haven't seen those challenges my own self.
>> I have other chronic health issues than those that would literally be within the domain of this website, and sometimes I get quite overwhelmed.See? I can still keep up!:
I was starting to feel the chest pain about now one year ago. Aspirin was making it go away, but the ringing in my ears (not related to earlier ringing) increased till I couldn't hear people speaking to me. January 5 I'm hospitalized and CAT scanned. Seems a whole fleet of small blood clots decided to be pulmonary embolisms. Bunches of them. Pain like never before. And I have a good range of intense pain episodes for comparison. Got these embolisms/clots from the DVT I had the previous summer, had treated and took blood thinner xarelto for.
By June I was probably recovered. It gets fuzzy.
At about that time I went to my primary care because I had these earaches and I had been taking huge doses of ibuprofen for the pain. This was a 'increasing pain; increasing dosage' thing extending back to last summer. I was up to a gram every 4 hours the week when I saw my doctor.
(You know? It's not good when your situation makes your doctor saying 'Well, you're don't have an infection' not a good thing.)
Doc examined me and said, "You don't have an infection."
My ENT finds the mass. CAT scans reveals a primary on the back of my tongue (on the right side, against my eustachian tube of the ear that was complaining) and it has associates in several adjacent lymph nodes. ENT does a biopsy which confirms it's cancer. I get a PET scan.Squamous cell carcinoma, stage 4, HVP16 positive: seven weeks of daily radiation with cisplatin chemotherapy every three weeks. That was August 3 through September 22.
I will spare us more details. I can make them available if requested. But I shant spring them on the unsuspecting here. And this may not be the best of venues as you suggest.
But, I am doing fine. I am still recovering from the effect of treatment. I must regain my weight. A PEG feeding tube still gets nutrition to me since I haven't stomached solid food since August.
Tuesday the 27th I was PET scanned. This imaging will tell if I still need treatment. I won't see my doctors to get the report until the 6th. Word is the smart money is betting big that I'm clear. It's a safe bet.
So, Domain, Shmomain, I say!>> I know enough to adjust my inputs/outputs, and to keep my productivity at the forefront.
Okay, you got me here. I thought I knew my ins and outs but my cancer treatments turned them inside out. I felt inside out and many other ways too. My understanding has been inside out repeatedly. My productivity has been maintaining: my treatments; my sustenance; my medications; my sanity; my caregivers; my support systems.
>> I'm one tiny cog in an international scientific effort to develop nuclear reactors that simply cannot melt down like Fukishima or blow up like Chernobyl.>> All those electric cars that peeps dream of driving have to be powered somehow.
What's your take on hydrogen fuel cells? Toyota has one in production now: the Mirai?
How about hydrogen internal combustion engine cars?
>> I wish all Babblers a Merry Festive, and all the best in the New Year.
Hear, Hear! May we each and every one observe our/their celebration(s) with/within our/their faith tradition(s)!
Or not, however it may please them. But please be careful out there. Seems like a lot of good folks are not making it to 2017. We hope we all make it. We are good here. But don't let our guard down once we do get to 2017. Remain vigilant.
(i am not mentioning any "laser interferometer gravitational wave observatories": shhhhh!)
A Happy, Healthy 2017 to one and all!

It's sweet to hear your sweet voice is even sweeter in this new year. I thank you for posting back to me. (reminds me: i still owe Tabitha a post back.)Only a matter of time before we get the rest of my encumbrances functional again and I am healed as healed as I was back in say, oh, 2014: pre-DVT and pre-earaches. Nostalgia for those good old days lights my path to an even brighter future. Watch out 2017, I'm coming for you!

I agree with your outlook. I have a small apartment, a TV, a sound system, and a computer. No cat. Compared to many others, I live in luxury. I remind myself of that every now an then. I am extrememly fortunate.
So far, 2017 offers the hope of remission from bipolar depression. Unfortunately, because some areas of the brain have atrophied so much, I will never be what I was before I became ill. However, in some ways, I will be so much more. I am blessed.
