It's Too Quiet...

Posted by gadchik on June 20, 2012, at 14:47:55

My house is so still and hushed during the day now.Just me,my cat,my dog.We three, everyday.Im 48,too young to be retired.I need to reinvent.I miss the teens running in after school, all the chaos, the creaking of the stairs.I miss chatting with them, hearing of the latest gossip around school.I hike alot, but you can only hike so many miles in a day, clean house, shop, cook.Next day, repeat.

You've got some time to fill, and I'm guessing the nest feels pretty empty.
What do you want to do?

I have yet to get the confidence I need to pursue a job.I lost my career of 15 yrs when I had a severe breakdown in 2007.I dedicated this time to healing myself and launching my son into adulthood.Im just now beginning to feel some push to get going with my life sans a child.I know Ive said we need to let go of fear, yet I have not done so completely.Maybe, when the time arrives,I will be blessed with that "post menopausal zest".I need to get some swagger in my step!

Seriously that is the age I graduated from RN school and began working. Kids were grown. One a young 11 year old but could care for self. I found it fun to work for well not first time but almost first time in life. First decide what you love and then volunteer in it as I did in a hospital psychiatric unit. And get an idea of what you like to do. Geez miss nursing so much. Phillipa

Thanks for the advice,p.It makes alot of sense to volunteer.I do have some involvement in our contracting business, though I do not find it fulfilling, and I do it from home.I have some thinking to do.P,you must have had alot of ambition and confidence to become an RN!

Bahahahahaha, the system censored Phillipa's Latin.

I was thinking volunteer work or a hobby where you would meet people and interact. I joined a running group. I'm not very social nor good at making friends, but it gets me out of the house and relatively out of my head. I also take my dog to the local dog park, you get to know the people and dogs who generally attend at the same times as you.

What are your interests? There's probably something which will tie in to them. Just a few...

Book club
Kennel club, dog obedience club, dog sports (exhaustive list: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dog_sports )
Toast masters
Rotary Club
If your dog is suitable, therapy dog training which will enable you to visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
Gardening - teaching gardening to disabled people or those in nursing homes, land/forestry conservation work
Sport clubs
Knitting, sewing or quilting group
Respite work / mentoring for kids and families experiencing hardship
Clubs which discuss politics and current events

Thanks, youve covered quite a few of my interests.I think thats where you start, and go from there.Luckily,I do have a hiking buddy, and that helps get me out of my head, and of course,my ever-loving husband.I really wouldve gone nuts without him here to center me,the me without my boy.I miss him so.

Yes,he wants to be a father at 30,not 19! However,he's been in a serious relationship for almost 2 yrs,and his girlfriend is so special.I love her! They are living together in an apt. for college, both ambitious,so probably will be awhile.Ive got nothing but time!
