Bahahahahaha, the system censored Phillipa's Latin.
I was thinking volunteer work or a hobby where you would meet people and interact. I joined a running group. I'm not very social nor good at making friends, but it gets me out of the house and relatively out of my head. I also take my dog to the local dog park, you get to know the people and dogs who generally attend at the same times as you.
What are your interests? There's probably something which will tie in to them. Just a few...
Book club
Kennel club, dog obedience club, dog sports (exhaustive list: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dog_sports )
Toast masters
Rotary Club
If your dog is suitable, therapy dog training which will enable you to visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
Gardening - teaching gardening to disabled people or those in nursing homes, land/forestry conservation work
Sport clubs
Knitting, sewing or quilting group
Respite work / mentoring for kids and families experiencing hardship
Clubs which discuss politics and current eventsRing the bells that still can ring
forget your perfect offering
there is a crack in everything
that's how the light gets in
