Anybody reading something good?

Posted by floatingbridge on June 28, 2011, at 10:36:20

I hear it's summer. In the US, people talk about their summer reading.

Anyone reading something interesting?

FB only read wee hours of night on my Nook so no glasses the new James Patterson book. 10th Judgement? Not sure of name? Can't sit and read during day and it used to be my passion to read nonstop. Phillipa

No upgraded to the color one with light and drove me nuts as same as being on a computer. I use the lamp by the bed and can sleep fine. Love Phillipa

The Air We Breathe by Andrea Barrett. Her book Ship Fever won the National Book Award (I think) and was great if you haven't read it.

I haven't heard about it either. I have been meaning to look it up because I like the title. I don't know this author, though I am wondering now if she has been on NPR.

Hey, thanks, e-. I ordered her Ship Fever. I thought I could tackle the shorter novellas. You read this, too?

> Yes. It's all these short novellas about natural science in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Beautifuly written, fasciniting characters, not the least bit depressing.

A while back, I read this book Little Bee which had been highly recommended by a friend. There was endless writing about suicide. The previous summer, I had come within inches of hanging myself and the book freaked me out, literally left me shaking and panicked. My daughter told me I have to stop reading depressing books. So Andrea Barrett is completely non-depressing (to me at least)

e-

I remember when Little Bee came out. I
had no idea about the suicide theme in it, but something about the reviews and blurbs told me to stay away. I think your
daughter's advice is really sound. So I am more positively expectant now than before about Ship Fever. Thanks!

I bought it used at Amazon for 1¢. Very silly. Shipping was $3.99. But that's media mail. Who knows when it will arrive.

My last novel was Astrid & Veronika.
There was an unexpected (to me) tragedy in it, and I had to put the book down for months before I could return and finish it.

There are a number of fine books I have
just had to use a wise mind and refuse.

Where you live, there are umpteen good book shops. Used and new. I really liked your city.
