REALLY missing my students

Posted by Maxime on December 19, 2010, at 17:22:00

On Thursday I organized a huge pot luck party for the seniors where I work .. my students as I prefer to think of them. They really know how to party! We had so much fun! They were dancing and really enjoying the moment. I asked everyone to bring in a favorite Christmas CD so that they we could play it. One women brought in her gospel music which is very lively. We played that most of the time. I handed out door prizes and then they told me to stay standing. And one by one, a student from each class presented me with a Chrismas card and gift. I started to cry. They all hugged me when it was time to leave and I made plans with some of them to see them over the holidays.

When I teach the computer classes we always have a break and I make tea and coffee and bring out some cookies. Sometimes they will bake a cake and bring it in. I always take the break with them. I learn so much from them. They have all had such interesting lives.

I know it hasn't been long since I last saw them, but I am really feeling down that I won't see them tomorrow. I won't see most of them until January 10th and that's a long time away.

I feel needed there and makes me feel better about myself. There are some with personal problems and I help with them with all that.

Best of all I get hugs after each class. I never used to like hugs because I grew up in household where we didn't physically show our affection. We didn't show it in any way. Turns out that hugs feel pretty good when they are from people that you care about and trust.

Hey, Maxime.

The Holidays are rough on lots of people for lots of reasons. You're missing the people who care about you. I have to visit Hell Town to visit the family.

The important thing, I think, is to focus on the good in the Holidays and push through till they're over. January 10th may *seem* like an eternity from now, but its only a couple of weeks. Rough as this stretch of time may be, January 10th will roll around and *bam*, there you'll be, back at work surrounded by people you trust and who appreciate you.

In the meantime...I don't know. There's Babble, I guess? I mean, the internet isn't exactly comforting, no matter how nice a post may be, but at least its something. I care about you.

Take care and keep up with all of us here at babble. You can babblemail me if you want--this time, I'll actually respond.

:-)

What a wonderful new year to look forward to - and so, so rare!
Sorry you are already missing them, but it's understandable.

I am lucky.

The receptionist from work called me today. Apparently three seniors brought a load of Christmas cooking. Not baking, but cooking. The receptionist and the person who does the cleaning ate some of it because they know that I am vegetarian and there were dishes with meat! I don't mind if they eat it. I just want the names of who brought what so that I can thank them.

I am dropping by work tomorrow because we are going out for our staff lunch. I can't believe that they would go out of their way to share their cooking with me and to bring it all the way to centre.

I really don't want to go to staff lunch. I don't do well at those types of things. :(

I was going to suggest that you drop by the place this week and visit with those students who didn't have holiday plans with family.... and then realized that I have no idea whether it's a residential facility or not. (How about showing up at a school that's closed for the holidays and waiting for random people to walk by? Uh - NOT.) So I scratched that idea.

And then you posted this - you see how the universe works sometimes?

I know that you can take the comfort offered in the spirit that it's given. These people, who spend limited time with you and are only just getting to know you, care so much. That is such a special gift in itself.

Hi PC,

Oddly enough, I work at a Boys and Girls Club! I think it's only Boys and Girls club that has activities for seniors! There a few who although they will have family over on Christmas day will be alone the rest of the time. I plan on calling all of them to see how they are doing.

What is a pot luck party? That sounds very suspicious to me, all the more since you are from Canada :)

LOL! A pot luck is when everyone brings is a different dish of food and we share it. It takes some arranging or else we would have ended up with 60 cakes or something like that. It ends being a lot of food but people can bring some stuff home with them

No "pot" involved, I although I suspect that some of them enjoy their "herb"

Right, "herb" is how people used to call it in Canada.. when I was there during high school, people would come up to me in the mall and be like "hey man y'need sum errrrb?" LOL

people who enjoy cooking with cannabis say that that's a great way to get high, so who knows whether some of your students didn't intentionally mistake the "pot luck" thing the way I did ;)...

Ha-ha-Ha! Well, no one brought brownies ... Can you imagine, 30 high seniors? LOL!

Thanks for the smile and chuckle. You have no idea how much I needed that.

One of my students had me over for lunch today and we were joined by another student. Both students are Italian so sometimes they would start talking in Italian and I would be lost.

THERE WAS SO MUCH FOOD. One woman kept same to me "Eat, Eat!". But I can't each much at one time. I did my best though because I wanted her to be happy. I ended up staying there the afternoon listening to stories about growing up in Italy.

It was a nice break for all of us. I was there all afternoon. I felt guilty because my mom was alone, but I really needed to be away from her for a bit. I called her several times though to make sure she was ok.

It was a nice afternoon.
