On Thursday I organized a huge pot luck party for the seniors where I work .. my students as I prefer to think of them. They really know how to party! We had so much fun! They were dancing and really enjoying the moment. I asked everyone to bring in a favorite Christmas CD so that they we could play it. One women brought in her gospel music which is very lively. We played that most of the time. I handed out door prizes and then they told me to stay standing. And one by one, a student from each class presented me with a Chrismas card and gift. I started to cry. They all hugged me when it was time to leave and I made plans with some of them to see them over the holidays.
When I teach the computer classes we always have a break and I make tea and coffee and bring out some cookies. Sometimes they will bake a cake and bring it in. I always take the break with them. I learn so much from them. They have all had such interesting lives.
I know it hasn't been long since I last saw them, but I am really feeling down that I won't see them tomorrow. I won't see most of them until January 10th and that's a long time away.
I feel needed there and makes me feel better about myself. There are some with personal problems and I help with them with all that.
Best of all I get hugs after each class. I never used to like hugs because I grew up in household where we didn't physically show our affection. We didn't show it in any way. Turns out that hugs feel pretty good when they are from people that you care about and trust.
