Wow! Boxing day is based on "the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society". Alright! Bring on Boxing Day! Presents for me! Seriously, that's awesome. Do people there really follow through with the sentiment?

Only a bit.

Then again, I should note that both our PM and your president-elect have devoted some of their holidays to handing out food to the homeless.

Where I live we have what are called Beggars Banquets where the community puts on food for them.

I was in my mid 20s before I saw a homeless person, and that was in Europe.
Of course we never saw the Aboriginal people; they were somewhere else.

Yep, people actually turn up to the shopping centres today.

I feel mildly shocked by that.
This is supposed to be a holiday.

>As you would know, Australia started out as a penal colony (which gave us our sense of humour), and which we were ambivalent about after (though not now), and this might explain why we have it and you don't, or so it occurred to me.

This is from an undigested book review I heard about the fight to end transportation in the 1850s, which had a liberal appearance but carried within it a conservative (ie pro-English) reaction and was an argument about the nature of Australia. The old convict Australia was more egalitarian.
But what is the 'it' to which I refer?
Presumably (this is next morning) I had the idea that there is a distinguishing quality to Australian humour, one that, for sure, you will not find in any mainstream Australian movies.

I grew up in the country, west of the range, and we weren't egalitarian at all.
People who came to work there were surprised to find a different world. Is this what I was thinking about?

Mainstream Australian history was as boring as batshit (free trade vs protectionism), but occasionally you could find a ray of interest: Wentworth wanting to introduce slavery, someone else wanting the English system of titles, bands of convicts developing ideas about another colony over the range where the convicts were treated well and everyone lived in harmony, and, of course, the big one....the efforts of the Aboriginal people to deal with the encroaching disaster.

There probably are some decent Australian movies, just like there must be some good American ones.

One I liked was "Chopper".

I'll have to check that out! That doesn't even look like Eric Bana.

Thanks for all the info. I should do more research on the place I say I'm so fascinated about, there's obviously a lot I don't know. I guess my fascination has always centered around the geographical aspects - the rain forest, the Great Barrier Reef, etc. I'm all about the natural beauty in the world, and jungles/forests and beaches/the ocean are two of my favorite things. I'd also like to see South American someday. And every beach there is. Then there's the mountains. These types of things just blow me away with their vastness and beauty. When I've studied up on Pantheism I find I can identify.

Thanks again for the late night talk! I really needed to talk to someone for a bit not related to me!

TC - don't you guys have "Boxing Day"?

I always thought it was because after Christmas, people got rid of all the boxes that the presents were in!! LOL

So there ya go - what do I know!

Hi TC - thx for asking! Yes. Things went okay in their own way. I'd created the scenario that he'd not go in to work on Monday, and not phone in & that he'd get fired. :-(( That's the crazy way my mind goes to the negative & then RUNS with it!

Anyway, I called him Sunday nite to say Hi & ask if he wanted a 'wake-up' phone call Monday morning. He said "oh - I'm okay Mom! But okay - phone me if it'll make you feel better. I'm setting my alarm for 8. I'm scheduled to work at 9:30" He was with 2 friends & they were coming over to our house, so I thought that he'd probably be up until all hours! (which he probably was).

So I phoned him at 8....no answer. Called him again at 9 & he sounded half dead & said he was feeling really sick & was going to phone in sick. So I was feeling pretty awful, given the 'scenario' I'd created!! Anyway, I phoned him late in the afternoon & he said that he had left a message in the morning & had phoned in again around 4 & apologized for not having been able to go in, & asked his co-worker if it had gone okay. She said that yes, she & boss had done fine. She said that when he came in today to pick up his paycheque, he could see when he was next scheduled to work (he only works Mon-Thur & they're not open on New Years Day). So his boss said he didn't need to come in tomorrow, since he was still feeling a bit sick. He works next on Monday. Also son said he's feeling much better tonight. I was sick too - we probably had the same thing. I'm feeling about 95% better now.

Can't call me 'brief', can you??

Thx for asking TC.

How are you doing? You start your job next week don't you? How are you feeling about that?

I send hugs, luv, Kath

I know what you mean about creating a scenario in your head and running with it. I do that too. But it sounds like your son did okay, even with calling in. That's good too hear.

I'm doing okay, but I've been off my meds for 3-4 weeks now, and I'm starting to feel some effects from it. Because I don't have insurance I just haven't gotten any more since I ran out. I know you all gave me a lot of places to look for help with that, and I did look into it. I found a hospital I could go to, but I guess I got side tracked with other things. Then I decided to try St. John's Wort and Valerian, so I will give that a shot until I figure something else out.

As for the job, I'm excited and nervous. But mainly I'm just excited at the thought of working again. Never thought I'd feel that way, but I do. I guess part of it is just being part of society again, but also I miss the opportunity that work gives me to channel my energy into something constructive. Not to mention the feeling of supporting myself!

~ ~ ~ yup - then when I think negatively like that, I get scared that I'll CREATE whatever I'm afraid of! (the law of attraction thing). Yes, my son is really doing quite well with his job. I'm trying to focus on that. I was doing quite well with saying "Isn't it nice that...." whenever I got anxious. I just haven't been doing as well with it! Don't know exactly why. Maybe because I'd been feeling pretty well & then stopped using my SAD light lamp & would forget to take my St. John's Wort & 5HTP (ya might want to try it 5HTP TC) ~ ~

~ ~ I know what you mean about knowing about something & just not getting around to it. St. John's Wort can take a while to build up in your body - or at least to start working, so don't despair if it hasn't worked yet. Some people find Valerian works well for them. I found that it gave me unpleasant dreams. I hope they work for you. How much SJW are you taking? ~ ~

Going to bed now - I guess I'll read first! :-)

Thanks! Tonight was actually the first time I took the SJW. I took 900mg, which is what seemed to be the norm from what I've read. I've been feeling a little sick to my stomach though, which I read was a possibility, so maybe I should have taken a lower dosage to see how I reacted to it first. How much do you take?

The Valerian gives me an odd reaction, I suddenly get motivated to organize things! I can't tell if its acting like a stimulant or not - its not really quite like that, but I've had the same reaction both times I've taken it. I've suddenly found myself organizing and tidying up things when I'm supposed to be getting ready for bed! Isn't that odd? I'll probably post this on meds or alternative tomorrow and see if anybody else has had this reaction.

I hope you have a good night! Thanks for the support!

-T

P.S. What was that other one you mentioned? Is it for anxiety or depression?

~ ~ ~ Hi TC - My caps are 300 mg SJW Extract - aerial parts (leaves I guess! LOL) standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin (900mcg/capsule) It says take 1 cap 3x per day. That's what I do.

In my "Natural Health Bible" it says some people take 500 mg twice/day or 600 mg in the morning & 300mg in the evening. It says if it bothers your stomach, to take it with food. If you want any more info from that book, let me know & I'll post it on the Alternative board. It does say to be careful if going from regular SSRI's to SJW. Let me knkow if you need more info about that TC, as you have to be careful in that case, not to raise seratonin too much.

I have a SJW & a 5HTP beside my bed with a glass of juice or water. I take them if I wake up around 5 or 6, then go back to sleep. The other one I take is 5HTP. I'll say more about that at the end.~ ~

> The Valerian gives me an odd reaction, I suddenly get motivated to organize things!

~ ~ ~ WOW - I should take it!!!! That would be a wonderful side effect. Wow - listen to this - I just looked it up in the same book:
"Except for the unpleasant odor, valerian generally causes no side effects. A few people experience mild gastrointestinal distress, andthere have been rare reports of people developoing a paradoxical mild stimulant effect from valerian" ! ! So maybe you're rare! ~ ~

> I can't tell if its acting like a stimulant or not - its not really quite like that, but I've had the same reaction both times I've taken it. I've suddenly found myself organizing and tidying up things when I'm supposed to be getting ready for bed! Isn't that odd?
~ ~ Maybe you could take it early in the day & have that happen NOT before bed.~ ~

> I'll probably post this on meds or alternative tomorrow and see if anybody else has had this reaction.

~ ~ ~ It certainly seems like it's related to the valerian & from what's in my book, it's not unheard of. NICE side effect!! ~ ~

> I hope you have a good night! Thanks for the support!
>
> -T
>
> P.S. What was that other one you mentioned? Is it for anxiety or depression?

~ ~ It's 5HTP. Our bodies use 5HTP to make serotonin. In my book, it talks of a study in which 5HTP or Fluvoxamine (an AD in the Prozac family) for 6 weeks. 5HTP worked a little better at reducing depressed mood, anxiety, physical symptoms & insomnia. It caused fewer & less severe side effect - the only complaint being occasional mild digestive distress. Dosage - 100 to 200mg 3x daily. Dosage on my bottle (100 mg) is 1 tab 1 - 2x daily. I take 2 - 3. If you decide to try it, make sure it says "No Peak X" on the bottle. It's some contaminant that had been found in tryptophan & some 5HTP.

So I'm feeling a little less anxious today. I'm not sure if it's due to going back to my pills 3x/day. I'd been forgetting the during-the-day ones.

It's been very cold here today & I've felt like 'cacooning'. Seems like whenever I forget to take fairly large doses of Vit C, whatever 'bug' I have starts manifesting itself again! Sigh.

I send you hugs TC :-) Kath

SJW can take a while to get up to max.
