Mr Vonnegut said...

Posted by Jai Narayan on April 11, 2007, at 23:22:11

Mr. Vonnegut said in the prologue to “Timequake” that it would be his last novel. And so it was.

His last book, in 2005, was a collection of biographical essays, “A Man Without a Country.” It, too, was a best seller.

In concludes with a poem written by Mr. Vonnegut called “Requiem,” which has these closing lines:

When the last living thing

has died on account of us,

how poetical it would be

if Earth could say,

in a voice floating up

perhaps

from the floor

of the Grand Canyon,

“It is done.”

People did not like it here.

He also said he would like to sue the tobacco companies for failing to give him cancer.

A truly great man.

*sighs*

Though his style of writing wasn't for me really, he opened up borders in fiction and was one of the few truly original authors.

RIP Kurt..

Loved his books, they blew my junior-high mind. R.I.P. Kurt Vonnegut

hmmm....to lose your asterisking virginity on such a benign word as f*rt....

Some people might suggest you'll have to work harder and use a different word before it really *counts* as your *first.* Not me, of course, but some people ;-)

So, Tabitha, do you feel different?

Can't remember which book but Vonnegut wrote a sci-fi piece (had to do with one of Saturn's moons I think) "Moons of Titus"? (too lazy to look it up)

Turns out some outer-space alien scout is marooned on Saturn's moon and is unable to contact home. He needs AAA in the worst way.

I'm not sure about the details but he tinkers with earth's evolution (or started it) He signals and beckons mankind, and after thousands of years of evolution, they eventually find him.

Anyway, once we humans arrive, they bring some tiny part he needed to fix his transmitter. Mankind's entire evolution amounted to this one purpose - to deliver this one tiny piece of equipment to a stranded alien so he, in turn, could send a message: "Be Home Soon".

Or something like that. Very thick paraphrasal atmosphere. You may want to wear extra protection. (now I tell ya)

"The Sirens of Titan" (Titan is a very large moon of Saturn)

Oddly enough, I remember a lot about the book but I'd half-forgotten this!

>>> second to me of course. ok, maybe i come a close second.

now the question becomes is the shame for the loss of Mr. Vonnegut or that you're second? ;)

several tattered dog earred paperbacks of his sit on the shelf ready for yet another rereading.

The Eden Express: A Memoir of Insanity by Mark Vonnegut (his son) tells about first person schizophrenia. quite an interesting read despite its age.

back to the farm state...didn't that other IN homeboy turn 60 the other day? Mr. Letterman of course! ;p
