Can't remember which book but Vonnegut wrote a sci-fi piece (had to do with one of Saturn's moons I think) "Moons of Titus"? (too lazy to look it up)
Turns out some outer-space alien scout is marooned on Saturn's moon and is unable to contact home. He needs AAA in the worst way.
I'm not sure about the details but he tinkers with earth's evolution (or started it) He signals and beckons mankind, and after thousands of years of evolution, they eventually find him.
Anyway, once we humans arrive, they bring some tiny part he needed to fix his transmitter. Mankind's entire evolution amounted to this one purpose - to deliver this one tiny piece of equipment to a stranded alien so he, in turn, could send a message: "Be Home Soon".
Or something like that. Very thick paraphrasal atmosphere. You may want to wear extra protection. (now I tell ya)
