DBT is supposed to be fantastic, and super effective, and may be JUST what you are looking for. I hope you are able to find a group. Meanwhile, I think you might do your best now to pick up, and carry on, without over-dwelling over how you think you've messed up with this or that. Good luck, Deneb. And I hope you look for DBT in addition to that career counselor. Sounds like a great plan of action!

You're the only one right now who can decide if you'll be okay. But I think you will be. You're a lot stronger than you think. What do you have to look forward to right now? San Diago? Ice cream? A movie night with your mom or a friend?

You've had a rough time of it lately, so be gentle on yourself

Hey Deneb,

I can't remember what the words for DBT are. I know what it does, but what do the letters stand for?

I live North of Toronto. Am not sure if you're in Ontario. I'd be interested to know what you find available with the DBT. Would you let me know?

I'm sorry you're scared, but I can understand how you could feel scared. It's good that you can realize what it is you're feeling and that you can talk about it. Is your Dad a 'huggy' person? Or are you, for that matter? If I was & my Dad was, I think I'd tell him I was scared & that I'd really like a hug.

Thinking of you Deneb, luv, Kath

It's Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I have tried it -- it is very good for teaching distress tolerance skills, although there is homework that has to be done, so be prepared for that if you consider it.

I still have major problems to face. Nothing has been solved. I need to pull myself together.

I don't want to face my problems. I don't want to deal with life. I want to live in a fantasy-land. I don't want to deal with life. I don't want to think about my future. I'm having some sort of life crisis. I think I've been having it since I started university.

I want to avoid life so much that I wish I were a ghost. I don't want to disappear. I just want to escape.

I can't think about school or life right now, I get upset and I start getting desperate again.

I'm going to avoid things. Avoid life. Avoid life. I can't handle things right now so I'm just going to avoid.

I think homework or not, DBT would be PERFECT for you. I tried it briefly myself. It was very unique, and very effective. There's also a group component to it to. Nobody would let you even consider hurting yourself, and meanwhile, you'd be aggressively working to better your life. I REALLY REALLY hope you are able to seek out a program. I even think you should make it a top priority. Best wishes and best of luck, Deneb.

Oh definitely! I think almost anyone can do it, smart or not, you just have to be really committed to doing it for it to have its greatest effect.

Phillipa- I'm laughing with you! The amount of homework they give can indeed be almost diabolical. (Not really- I'm exaggerating. But still got a good chuckle!)

Thanks, is it specifically for DBT?

I searched under 'skills workbook' & just found numerous references to various books.

Did you order the book from CMHA? Would you mind telling me the title of the book?

Thanks! Kath

Phillipa - can you believe????

I'm going to be freakin' 60 next month????

How can this be true??

I 'feel' about 36. I don't look it, believe me!

Oh boy!!

Kath

PS - I love my T-shirt that says, "Gray hair is a small price to pay for this much wisdom!!" Except the gray hairs I have are white, which I do prefer! Come to think of it, I still have tons of brown - most of it really, with a pronounced stripe at the front of white!

This is the DBT skills workbook used in the DBT sevice I was working for..

"Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder"

Its excellent.. but ofcourse, always better to do it with a therapist. It works especially well for self harming issues..

I was answering a question from Kath about a geographical region. I was NOT suggesting DBT for any particular person. I just wanted to make that clear in light of Dr Bob's no pressuring guidelines :)

Yes I was talking about the workbook Nikki mentioned. I ordered it from Amazon.

Zazenduckie & laima,

Jeez Louise - I didn't detect any pressuring at all in this thread.

I'm feeling upset. Must we be calm & neutral & unenthusiastic? Jeez - I'm ALWAYS using capitals & being emphatic & enthusiAStic etc!!!! Especially if I think something is a good idea, or has worked well for me, or might possibly be useful for someone!!!

I hope like heck that we don't have to be constantly re-reading our posts, looking at them with a microscope to make sure that we haven't written something that could be perceived as pressuring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh! Sorry. Any services offered through a hospital outpatient department would be free. That would be my first angle of attack. You'd probably need a referral from a staff shrink, but maybe just one from a family doctor.
