I got a hair cut

Posted by Deneb on August 26, 2006, at 21:12:40

My hair is medium length now. I'm wondering if I should have got it cut shorter? Hmmmm...

Washing and drying my long hair was a drag. Sometimes I wish I had the face for a boy's length cut, that would be really easy to take care of.

I got a hair cut and I didn't freak out! Yay! I've had bad experiences in the past, not about the actual hair cut, more about the social interaction.

I was able to participate in a little bit of small talk. I think I sounded like a normal person. Woohoo!

Who else has have bad experiences at the hair salon?

A few years back I remember one particularly bad visit. I was a real head case. You could definitely tell I was not normal. That happened to me once at the pdoc's and he asked me questions like if I knew where I was, yes I was that bad.

So...I'm really relieved that didn't happen today. I must say, my social anxiety is very much improved. :-)

Deneb* you GO girl!
I'm glad you've been doing some travelling and hanging out with friends this summer. Socializing is like anything else really- improves with practice!

And I have the WORST experiences with hairdressers. I'm usually very reluctant to get my hair cut. I was going to an Asian woman for a while. She gave a great, precise haircut, and I don't really speak much of her language, and vice versa, so there was no small talk, I just kind of showed her what I wanted, and then read a magazine or daydreamed while she did her job.

Alas, I moved. no more Asian lady. I went to a training salon. The woman who cut my hair was SO dimwitted. I couldn't talk about ANYTHING with her. I think the conversation went like this "So, are Fridays really busy around here?" "Um, well, yeah, but I like it, because then I can go out with the girls from my training course and party" "Oh, that's cool! ...we talked about bars/clubs/restaurants, and I ascertained that she likes places where pretty girls get in for free, and that she liked to wiggle her booty, in front of people of quantity, not quality... next she asked me what I was reading "Um, it's a book on memory" "Oh cool, I like to read" "Oh, I do too, but I haven't had much time to read "fun" stuff lately, only stuff for school." "Oh, you are in school?" "yes" "Wow, I'm so impressed. So, like what school are you in? [xxxcollege] "Oh, wow, like, I've heard of that one." [PEOPLE. the letters xxx stand for the city where she lives and works (and parties) for that matter!. Seriously.]

And at the end, a colleague came over, and she talked about me "Um, I think this side is higher than this side" yes, they agreed, the cut wasn't that great. but did she try to fix it? NO. She asked me if I noticed. um, lady, it's in the freakin' BACK of my head. YOUR JOB is to notice!! Just get me out of here, I'll find someone with a license.

My most recent hair-cut, the razor-cut bob (Dr. Bob, I intend you no injury!!) was VERY satisfying. The guy who cut it seemed inspired, and even admitted to me that it was so fun to talk to someone who wasn't obsessed by hair. We talked about stress, and modern life, and whaddyaknow? He told me all about his manic tripping on Wellbutrin. That was really funny! I didn't tell him about my meds, but we had a really fun conversation talking about what works and what doesnt. It was a jolly good time. I'll be going back pretty soon, I guess.

Deneb*, bravo for trying something new! Shorter hair is fun and makes you feel happier :)

Which one did you get cut? Sorry couldn't pass that one up. My dad's fault.

Geez, I need a haircut so bad! I just don't have enough time with work to schedule one.

My hair has been one of the things I've hated most about my body. I have thin, flighty deflated hair. I had one stylist, tho, that really knew what to do with it and the shape of my head and for the first time in my life I thought my hair was a plus, not a minus, in the "looks" department.

Had a hard time finding a new stylist out here in NYC, City of Vanity. I kinda bopped around from one Jean Louis David butcher shop to another, then I got myself bound into the Mother-of-All-Bad-Relationships ... and my torturer always saw this really expensive guy out on Long Island, so I figured what the hey -- if he cost $60 for a wash and cut (plus tip to the washer and to him) then maybe he knew nothing about hair. So, I get in the Chair, and he asks me how I want it cut, and me (silly me, thinking he was the pro and knew what he was doing) asks him what he thinks he can do with my hair to make it look good. Mr. $60+tips Pro says, "Nothing".

So much for that.

One day I passed by this sign for "Manning Hair Design" and I knew that was it! I didn't need my hair cut or styled, I needed a hair DESIGN. So I go in, and in this second floor salon on Madison Avenue in NYC's Miracle Mile are about 10-15 african american women getting extensions and braids by african american women stylists, and at the far end the only other male (other than children) -- this rail-thin hispanic man who was just too casually glam. So, after getting the customary wash, I get into the Chair and he asks the same question and I give him the same answer -- I don't know WHAT to do with this stringy, thin, lifeless hair ... do you? And he said of course he did! His boyfriend has the same type of hair so Cesar has to deal with it all the time.

Way WAY before Queer Eye, I was telling my male friends that if they wanted male advice, they really need to talk to gay men and not hetero women. Sorry, gals, but gay men know men better than you, even if you're talking about hetero men.

Well, that's my hair story, and I'm sticking to it.

Meanwhile, good on you, Deneb!!! I never realized how important hair was until someone made mine look attractive. So for you going for something new and different, two snaps up.

Finelinebob,
now I understand your name! I hope you don't take offense, but the gay guys are better at styling my hair than the average woman stylist I've been to. I hate to be stereotypical. This is just my experience. More fun to chat with too!

p.s. my hair flat, lifeless, thin. a fine line.

Cesar is great because we're of the same age, and going through the same sorts of personal, 2nd age crisis sorts of things. He's also got a 19 yr-old daughter he can party with when he goes pack to Puerto Rico to visit his family. But that or my hair have nothing to do with my name.

"Great Wits are sure to Madness near ally'd / And thin Partitions do their Bounds divide"

That is where my name ultimately comes from.

Finelinebob,
you have such a great memory for quotes. I'm really jealous. Where does this one come from- your eponym quote. I'd guess Elizabethan, but I'm kinda dumb about this stuff. I aspire to be literary, but my memory doesn't really work well with words. Tunes, though. I can memorize melodies very well. I can hear a piece once, and sing/play the major themes. play it a few more times, and I'll sing the counterpoint and harmony lines too. I wish that my memory skills were more finely honed to encode words.

In the mean time, I highlight, copy, and then drag it to my "stickies" icon in my dock. I have a couple of lovely quotes from a book I just read. I'll post them in a bit, I guess.

Hope you got up on time to do your stuff today.

Nah, I'm just a trained researcher, trained by some of the best in the world, so when I need to know the original of something like "there's a fine line between genious and insanity", I find it.

> Where does this one come from- your eponym quote. I'd guess Elizabethan, but I'm kinda dumb about this stuff.

Absalom and Achitophel, a poem by John Dryden, who was born a few years after Shakespeare died. It is said that the line was actually a jab at one of his rivals, and was intended to suggest that his rival had stepped over that boundary.

Personally, I like to think that I've blurred that line as much as possilbe.

I could really use some different hair right now, and what my shepherd is shedding just won't cut it. ;^)

Yikes. It's been barely long enough since I heard that name.

Absalom and Achitophel. Dumdidumdum.

That's not where he has;

Only the brave, only the brave, only the brave
deserve the fair.

Or is it the other way around? I forget.

Coughcoughcough. Dryden. uggggggggg. gggg. My least fav English poet.

But gee it's nice that you read English poetry, flb. A guitar, poetry books, great rock lyrics, a shaggy dog.

Tabitha, go for it!

I got my hair cut a couple of weeks back from long to middle length too!

I hadn't got it cut in around 4 years (since just after my accident, I think). Part of... Wanting to grow it. Get a new look or something. I still want to grow it, but the split ends had split ends had split ends. Now there is not a split end in sight but I had to lose a lot of length to get it to be this way. All stocked up on protein conditioning treatments and co. I'm going to grow it but regular trims every 7 weeks. I swear.

I'm not very happy with it at this length. My hair is fairly fine but I have a LOT of it. It also is fairly wavy / unruly. The length it is now it tries to go curly at the ends. I know I could blow dry it straight (well, I could if I wasn't so damned unco-ordinated) or get some ceramic straighteners and straighten it but
1) I can't be bothered.
2) I want to look after it and despite what people say applying heat just can't be good for it.

So... It will get there. If I pull it straight it JUST touches my shoulders. With the wavy thing... It isn't even close :-(

How much length did you lose?

I love concave bobs, but with the wavy hair they aren't the cut for me. I love short hair too but I don't have the face shape for it. Unfortunately... I had to learn that one the hard way. That was a hard hard lesson for me to learn and it took me YEARS to recover :-(

Long hair for me... Eventually. But that being said yeah I get sick of leaving hair everywhere. Though... It is a lot better since getting the split ends off.

I typically hate going to the hairdressers too. The last one I went to was a real bitch. She asked me if I used conditioner. I didn't get insulted... But I was pissed 'cause she was sniggering at how I just wanted a wet cut instead of a shampoo and all that crap (like I don't have better things to do with my time and money) and she sniggered when she saw how split my hair was and she sniggered when I said I wanted the split ends off and cut straight across because I wanted to grow it. Sure it probably would look better styled because of the wavy thing but you know what? IMHO most hairdressers have TRUELY APPALLING taste when it comes to haircuts and I'd rather have it straight across and grow it without having to worry about layers getting split as I'm trying to grow it out again later. No offense to anyone or anything but I don't much like the layered long looks. Still... She was a bitch to everyone in the salon, I noticed. And... I stood up for myself. I took a deep breath... And said (in a kinda bitchy tone which seemed appropriate) 'I don't want you to style it because I've had some truely appalling styles in my time'. And I pre-empted her next response with 'And it isn't about my going to cheap places either, in fact I've found that expensive places tend to insist on truely atrocious styles whereas at least your local barber has sharp sissors and can cut straight across as I request him to do'. She actually seemed to... Respect me after that. Said that my hair was hard to cut because there was so much of it. That styling it... Would be hard work... That I should probably go to a hairdresser for a while and let them 'get to know my hair' before letting them style it because there isn't any point fighting the waves... And if you try and cut against them then you can end up with some cuts that look pretty bad especially if you don't want to wreck it with blowdrying. So... I think we have an understanding.

But... Why is she such a bitch? And why did I need to stand up for myself to get her to respect me? I mean I get that I did and I passed the test but why do people have to be that way?

Sigh.

Sorry for the rant... But I have a bit of a phobia of hairdressers...

I've been trying to grow out my layers for over two years. And it's still not even. I cut it short when I lived at the beach. I must have been nuts as I see pics of it and it was horrible. I still like the loose curly perms I used to have. Love Phillipa

It sure sounds like you've had interesting experiences while getting your hair cut!

I don't go often enough to get to know any hairdresser. I go once a year.

My hairdresser and I weren't very chatty.
