I hate summer too. It wasn't until I posted on this site that I discovered that there *are* other people who get more depressed/anxious in the summertime, rather than the winter.
Cheers to Autumn!

Dang. I was going to tell you that you've got that in common with Dorothy Parker, but then I realized she was writing about spring...
Oh, well, it's still a fun rhyme, so here it is:
Summer makes me drowsy.
Autumn makes me sing.
Winter's pretty lousy,
but I hate SpringAnd yes -- some people feel as though they need to hibernate, others feel as though they need to estivate. Personally, I go both ways -- bivernate? Dunno, there's probably a word for it. I do get a bit more depressed and much more agoraphobic in the summer, though...

***Yes! My agorophbia (well not textbook agoraphobia-but close enough.) gets so much worse in the summertime.
It's like the world seems too big when it's sunny, the darkness or cloudiness make it a bit less intimidating and anxiety producing for me.I read in Newsweek I think, that for people with Bi-Polar depression and anxiety, the suicide rates are actually highest in July.
That's when both my attempts were.

Sorry to hear that. But I see now that others recognize how much summers really suck.
And I prefer wearing full length clothing (long sleeve shirts, sweaters, pants, etc). It just makes me feel cuddled and protected. Hides my skinny physique too, lol. :p
Cloudiness for me makes me feel sheltered. Like there is something protecting me from the rest of the universe. The rain increases this feeling of protection.
The clouds to me are like a blanket. I love them.
Ofcourse I like sunshine every so often, as long as it's cool in temperature. But I prefer a nice grey cloudy day with cool weather.
Weird I know, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the sweltering summers.

> The clouds to me are like a blanket. I love them.>>Before I revised my post I'd written that the clouds make it feel more womb-like and cozy.
Then I thought, well cozy is hardly a word for the world even if you aren't feeling anxious!
So I can totally relate to what you've said.
It's funny how knowning someone else feels the same can make you feel a bit better, even when it doesn't fix everything.
If I discover a remedy, I'll let you know though :)

I'll take winter any day.
Of course, southern winters are kind of nice.
And southern summers don't bear thinking about. I think everyone around here gets pretty down and crabby in July and August.

I hate summer, too. Too hot, too humid, can't even move. Don't even want to open the door! The heat sometimes makes me feel sick.
NOT a summer person. NOT a beach person. Nothing worse than a coating of sun screen caked with sand and a boiling sun with no breeze.

We just want to stay indoors in the air-conditioning.
I *hate* going outside this time of year.

I used to love summer when my kids were young hanging around the pool at the club, no cooking, nighttime drives for ice cream. Now I thought I was the only one who wishes it would get dark earlier. Somehow I always feel like I should be doing something all the time in summer. Everyone says it's summer it's time to get out and have fun. So that's why I'm more depressed too? I mean if you're not working there are a limited supply of places to go. And I've ruined my skin from the sun. So air conditioning for me. And agoraphobia cause no ones out except kids and most of them are at a pool somewhere. Thanks for this thread somehow it makes me feel better. Love Phillipa

I'm from Philly and loved the Fall, too. Summer heat and humidity sucked. I just stayed in A/C as much as possible. Now I live in Oregon where the summers are absolutely amazing; hot, dry days and cool breezy nights. The nighttime temps are about 30 degrees cooler than daytime highs! And if you like rain, we really have it here. But it rarely dips below freezing. Although I miss Autumn, I'll stay here. Maybe I'll just visit for the Fall colors.

Well, when you live down here in the hot zone you *never* think of summer as time to get anything done.
Summer is time to hide where it's cool. And then you end up bored our of your gourd. There's only so much shopping or anything a person can do to stay busy.
Even when I was young, I only did the sunshine/tan thing in spring, not the dead of summer.
Nope. Give me cooler. Cool air makes me frisky, not sunshine.

Yeah,
The heat melts my brain cells together into one big non-thinking glob. Give me a blast of cold air to clear out the cobwebs!

Any other summer haters dislike the 4pm - 8pm time? When the sun is setting low. Glaring oranges and reds in my eyes, casting long shadows, the hottest time of the day. Being tired and knowing another day is over.
I go into a "mini-4hour-depression" if I'm exposed to the outdoors during that time.
I LOVE the early mornings, it reminds me of fall. The greys and dark blues in the sky, and knowing that it's a new day, new start, new everything. I rarely every feel bad in the early morning. But always at dusk.
And dusk in the summer? The worst of the worst.

I think I can handle summer at the beach. :p
But summer in general just reminds me of hot, dry, sweaty landscapes. Gasoline spewing lawnmowers throwing dirt and dust in the air. Bugs and other disgusting creatures crawling everywhere devouring each other. Euck!
But I don't live anywhere near a beach so that option isn't available to me. So I'm stuck in a 3 month Dust Bowl every year. Misery at it's finest.

I lived at the beach and hated it. It was always windy and I mean real windy. And it ruins your skin. We aged l0 years in the two we lived there. And it's boring very boring. A vacation is fine . Love Phillipa

You should see Australia, Michael. There's nothing but sun, it beats down, fries you up, gives you skin cancer. Part of the fun for me in going to Europe was to actually have cloud cover and temperatures below 10C. In the summers here when it got down to 90F, people would start putting on jumpers. I'm going to Tasmania for a couple of weeks to enjoy what's left of the winter. Hopefully we will get snowed in.

I also heard on the radio that there was a ranch somewhere that read 127 degrees. That ties the state record! Don't be fooled. This is a very HOT state.
This is the end of the thread.
