Posted by Deneb on July 11, 2006, at 21:49:32

I'm chatting with Dr. Bob right now on Babblechat. It's calming me down some. I love Bob. Anyone want to join us?

I can chat with Bob here too.

Bob, what else do you like to do besides photography?
I like to travel.
Have you been on every continent?
I haven't been to Africa yet.
Will you go?
Yes, I hope so.
Dr. Bob, do you think I'm a troll?
No, why would I think that?
Some people at this other site called me a troll.
What did you do to elicit that response?
I'm not sure Bob. I don't know. Maybe I was being annoying somehow?
I think I got repetitive in my posts.
Dr. Bob, do you still have that magnet I gave you and others at the Babble Party?
Yes
Where do you keep it?
In a box.
I like talking to you Bob.
It's nice talking to you too.
(((((((Bob))))))))
Do you ever get lonely Bob?
Sure, doesn't everyone?
Yes, you've got a point there.
Bob, I want people to chat with us.
I know you do.
Bob, would you let me see you again one day?
I would like to see and meet all Babblers.
Dr. Bob, can I talk to you anytime I want to?
Sure you can. I'll always be there for you.
(((((Bob)))))
Thanks for being there for me, Bob.
I love you Bob.

I do that too sorta (except not with Bob). I don't get to talk to my best friend a lot, so a lot of the time I'll catch myself carrying on pretend conversations with her, ahaha. I'll just be carrying on a pretend conversation with myself. LOL

Deneb, your Bob-o-logue is sweet. Dr Bob is just there for you in a nice way.

Did you know therapy can be a lot like that dialogue?

Pretend conversations are comforting. I'm going to do this more often as a way to soothe myself when I'm upset.

Is therapy really like that? Don't you get into all sorts of psychological stuff? Don't you talk about about thoughts and feelings?

Well, therapists are different, but they don't all delve into your psyche all that much. Some just give support. I think the technical term for it is "supportive counseling" as opposed to psychotherapy. The first two years I did therapy, that's all we were doing. She just listened to me talk about my life, gave supportive responses, and tried to offer some advice here and there. I think you might be able to find some counseling to match what you want. And who knows, someday you might feel ready to do more in-depth therapy.

Supportive counselling sounds doable. It's sort of like what goes on here on the boards. I write about things and people support me and give advice. :-)

I think it would really help me if I got lots of encouragement and support for trying out new things like finding a job or doing volunteer work. Those things are scary to me and I need a lot of encouragement and positive reinforcement.

It would be nice to get some therapy like that, but I don't have the money for therapy right now.

I'm going to have to settle for Bob love and hamster therapy. <grin>

Therapy really can be like that. Yes, you do talk about feelings some, but earlier you were saying you felt angry. That could be something you could say to a therapist, and they would be able to help you figure out what to do with it. But if you told your therapist you weren't ready to talk about feelings, or didn't want to, they should be able to respect that and then your conversation would probably be more like your imaginary Bob one (although no hugs, more than likely :( ) Anyway, just wanted you to know that therapy can be whatever you want it to be as long as you express what you want to your therapist.

That's what therapy has been like for me too. Its like someone more knowledgeble who gives me advice about my problems. So far I have done cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Its all about changing your thoughts in order to change your behavior. I feel like it teaches a positive and empowering way of thinking. I've had a lot of bad things happen in the last few years, but I feel this way of thinking has helped me turn them into positives. I used to have very negative thoughts about myself, like: 'I'm a loser', 'nothing will ever get better for me', ect. Its really hard to get out of the habit of thinking that way, but I'm living proof that it can happen. I would highly encourage giving it a try. What have you got to lose?

Deneb I'm sure you can find a therapist with a sliding scale. Call your local hospital they will put you in touch with a Social Worker who will give you some names or suppor groups. Love Phillipa
