I can't see the endodontist until JULY 23!!
I have to suffer in pain for almost 3 months. And the July appointment is just a consultation...no pain relief. :-(
This pain is triggering me to think of killing myself again. :-(
I'm crying now thinking about it. I just feel sorry for myself right now. I don't deal well with pain or stress.
The pain was a little better today, but my pain upon biting has increased. Now I can't chew and my mouth aches.
I just want the nightmare to end. I can't handle this. If the pain gets worse I think I want to die.
I was fine earlier today...looking for a job and writing stuff about/to Dr. Bob, but now I'm miserable. I can't chew and my mouth aches. I have to endure this for at least 3 months.
I'm not sure that Advil even helps the pain. The pain is on and off by itself. Several times I took 400mg Advil and it did nothing. :-( I'm at the mercy of my pain when it strikes. :-(
I just want this nightmare to end.

Is it wisdom teeth, TMJ? Could you go to the emergency room or regular MD for pain relief?
I was once able to fix a painful dental situation by using a "home remedy": combination google research and what I could glean from a dental secretary. It wasn't too serious though - a sharp edge on a chipped molar that hurt everytime I bit down. I would tell you what I did but I suppose I shouldn't practice dentistry without a license. If you could be more specific about the problem perhaps someone could advise you or steer you in the right direction.
My daughter had a bad case of TMJ as a teenager and we found help on the internet, in addition to her treatment by a specialist. It's amazing how much help is on the web. In her case, one visit to a really good chiropractor, who worked on her jaw, did more than months of doctor visits. (something to think about)
I hope you can see someone about the pain or get some sort of relief sooner than later.

I don't know if a doctor would give me strong painkillers. My Mom has some Tylenol 3's. I used a few a few days ago because the pain kept me from sleeping. I don't want to use them up too fast...I have to last 3 months.
If the pain gets really bad, I'll definitely go to the doctor to ask for something. I'm just hoping right now that the worse of the pain has passed.
As long as I don't chew anything for the next 3 months, I should be able to survive.
:-( It looks like I might have to eat mush on my Toronto trip to meet Babblers. :-(

Are there any other endodontists where you live? Perhaps you could call around to see if there is one who could give you an appointment earlier than July.

The dentist suspects a cracked tooth. It really hurts when I bit down on it. I just found out I grind my teeth and my back teeth have been worn right down. This might have made my teeth more prone to cracking.
It hurt a lot two days ago. Now the pulp has died. I wonder if it just died. The pulp is dead, but it's still painful. The dentist says the fractured piece must be irritating the nerves below the tooth or something like that.
I need to see a specialist, but it's a really long wait.
I'm just going to hope the pain doesn't get too bad. At least I have some Tylenol 3's, hopefully they work better than Advils.

I don't know. I don't really know how to search for endodontists. I'll call my dentists again. (I saw two, the first one didn't give me a diagnosis)

A week of dental pain is really getting to me. I'm sitting here crying now. I don't want to take anymore of this. I just want to feel normal again. I want to go to sleep and not wake up until this nightmare is over.
I'm not a very strong person. :-(

I'm going to call the dentist tomorrow to ask if I can get an appointment sooner. I should have called today.

If the pulp has died, Deneb, you at least need to go on a course of antibiotics. That will help with the discomfort. And call the endodontist's office and ask what they recommend you do until your appointment to manage the pain (and get put on their cancellation list - if they get an opening before your appointment, they call you).
You're responsible for your body and taking care of it. The dentists are there to care for your mouth - ask them to do just that!
ClearSkies, who has had 43 years' worth of dental problems and survived to tell about them. But I won't because they are pretty gross.
Oh, and I worked in a dental laboratory and then for a dentist in private practice, for a total of 3 years. I not only kind of know what you are going through, I am reliving it with you!! Shudder. Trust us, you can feel better without having to contemplate the dark side.

Some people have used clove oil for toothache relief. You could put it on a q-tip and apply it to the tooth. Some people though have problems with irritation and such if it gets on soft tissue, so you should be careful if you try it. It's a very old remedy.

I feel for you. I was there once too. I've had 4 babies, serious car accidents w/injuries...stuff like that. Nothing gave me greater agony than persistent tooth pain. I was on the brink of suicide too Deneb. Tylenol and Advil don't help. See if your GP or Dentist will Rx a really strong anti-inflammatory for you till you can get it done. In the meantime can you call any university with a dental clinic, any DMD to see if they also do root canals, every oral surgeon, and every endodontist. July is too long to have to wait. Have you told your dentist how painful it is - tell him you NEED relief!
I just had some dental work today - took 4 hours, cried for 2. It seems almost barbaric compared to the rest of healthcare procedures. But it is better than suffering with it. I"m sorry you're in so much pain...go to who ever you have to, to get some relief.
When I had the horrible tooth pain, I needed my gall bladder out, but bec. of meds for tooth pain, couldn't have it done, so I suffered with both for 3 months. The stupid dentist capped my tooth, and triggered the nerves - neededed a root canal, but he refused to refer me to an endodontist. Told me it was sinus pain, or ear ache. I ended up in the emergency room twice it was so bad. The ENT told he was irresponsible, and referred me to another dentist...a good dentist. The first one was an idiot. Picked up all my records, and x-rays, went to the new dentist, got my root canal, and then went through the dental society to get my $1,000 back from the first - which gave me so much satisfaction. And then he actually had the nerve to say, "you understand this ends our professional relationship" No sh*t dude!I hope you can find someone to Rx meds, and then find someone to fix this pain more quickly than July! BTW, I've never been to an endo who had to do a consult first. Do your dental x-rays show you need it?

I got some antibiotics on Fri. I'm taking them right now. Not sure why the dentist gave them to me, but I was willing to try anything to get rid of the pain.

I got them to put me on their cancellation list. Right now the pain has almost completely stopped, thank goodness. There's still pain with biting, but I can just avoid doing that. Just gotta eat foods that don't require chewing. Sweets also cause a lot of pain. Just have to avoid sweets.

Pain is horrible. Sorry you were in such pain. :-( My pain has gotten a lot better yesterday and today. I'm not taking Advil as much. I just have to avoid chewing and sweets now.
I'm not on the brink of suicide. I was just having passing thoughts when the pain got bad and from the stress of this whole situation.
> Tylenol and Advil don't help. See if your GP or Dentist will Rx a really strong anti-inflammatory for you till you can get it done.
I got a prescription for ibuprofen 600mg. Three Advils would be the same.
> In the meantime can you call any university with a dental clinic, any DMD to see if they also do root canals, every oral surgeon, and every endodontist. July is too long to have to wait. Have you told your dentist how painful it is - tell him you NEED relief!
Right now it's not too painful. It was two days ago. I would still prefer not to wait so long though. I want to be able to eat! I called the dentist again to see if there were other endodontists, they only gave me one other phone number to call. I think I need to see an endodontist because my tooth may be cracked and I guess the root canal procedure will be complicated. Meanwhile I'm on the cancellation list.
> I just had some dental work today - took 4 hours, cried for 2.(((((fairywings)))))
I hate dental work too. :-(
>It seems almost barbaric compared to the rest of healthcare procedures. But it is better than suffering with it. I"m sorry you're in so much pain...go to who ever you have to, to get some relief.
I think I might call my original dentist again and see what he recommends.

> The ENT told he was irresponsible, and referred me to another dentist...a good dentist. The first one was an idiot.
The first dentist couldn't give me a diagnosis. He just gave me antibiotics and said I grind my teeth. I went to another dentist for a second opinion. This dentist said I probably cracked my tooth and need a root canal.
> Picked up all my records, and x-rays, went to the new dentist, got my root canal, and then went through the dental society to get my $1,000 back from the first - which gave me so much satisfaction. That's really great that you were able to get your money back. You were very resourceful to contact the dental society.
> I hope you can find someone to Rx meds, and then find someone to fix this pain more quickly than July!Me too!
> BTW, I've never been to an endo who had to do a consult first. Do your dental x-rays show you need it?
My dental x-rays don't show anything wrong, (except that I grind my teeth) but I still have pain. The dentist said that cracked teeth don't usually show up on x-rays. The root canal will be complicated due to the cracked tooth, so I need the endodontist to do it.

I hope that things get better for you soon. And if that first dentist charges $1,000 for an "I don't know", it sort of reminds me of Mark Twain who was treated for a broken leg by a Faith Healing practitioner. He later got a bill for his still broken leg. He complained that they did nothing for his leg and was told "We healed you in spirit", to which he responded "Well, I paid you in spirit."

There's only pain upon biting now. I didn't have to take Advil or use the clove oil today. I think those few days of intense pain were from the pulp dying. Now the pulp is dead, so no more pain from the tooth itself.
I don't know why I have pain with biting though. I'm guessing the nerves below the tooth are irritated?
It's much better today. I was able to eat rice and chicken by chewing carefully.
Let's hope it continues to get better.
Thanks for all the well wishes.

The infection, D. You took antibiotics, to allow the swelling to go down. It is the confined spaces in the jaw that lead to the pain being so intense. Bone and tooth are not forgiving, in so far as the spaces within them. If the tissue swells, the nerve gets squeezed.
> I don't know why I have pain with biting though. I'm guessing the nerves below the tooth are irritated?
That is both from the infection and your uncorrected bruxism. There are many behaviours associated with bruxism, including holding the jaw clenched during the daytime. The muscles get sore, and the soft tissues of the gum get tender. Throw in an infection, and you're above the pain threshold. The infection-related inflammation may have physically subsided but the tissues are still healing. From the sounds of things, you really do need a guard while sleeping. Those teeth you have now are the best you'll ever have.

Larry, how do you know so much about dental problems? LOL Larry, the know it all. :-)
I've developed yet another source of intense pain. :-(
I have extreme sensitivity to hot, cold and sweets now. INTENSE shooting PAIN results. It's about 15 seconds of pure hell! I'm not exaggerating! Even drinking water at room temperature triggers this pain! I'm rubbing toothpaste for sensitive teeth onto my teeth. Even the toothpaste triggers the pain. Why is this happening? I thought my tooth was dead? Aaaahhh! I just want the pain to stop!!!!
When will my dental nightmare end? :-(
I feel like I would rather extract my teeth than suffer this more.
Pain is horrible. It stops me from concentrating on more important things. When it strikes, all I can think about is the pain. When I don't have pain, I still anticipate the pain. I'm constantly thinking, what will trigger my pain? I dread it.
If I ever get this pain to stop, I will have a new appreciation of what people who suffer from pain go through.

I just did a very PAINFUL experiment with a popsicle. It still hurts.
I broke off a pea sized chuck of the ice and placed it on supposed "dead" tooth. It hurt like a @$#%$#^%&&%!!! It's still aching.
I wonder why it didn't hurt when the dentist tested it to cold?
I don't know what the heck is going on with my teeth now.
