anyone ever get this symptom?

Posted by sleepygirl on March 12, 2006, at 20:33:24

a feeling of panic, then detachment, a rush to the head and up through the stomach, inability to speak or move, or if able to speak it coming out garbled and unintelligible, which lasted for a couple of minutes maybe, or just one, ending with a nasty headache

not fun if people around at the time
what the heck is this?

when I was much younger this was only "deja vu", but then it started getting more intense, and frequent, triggered by nothing, and sometimes I could feel it coming on, sometimes I could stop it, sometimes not
then it started to come along with the not being able to speak or move stuff and the nasty headache

I don't like to speculate but it does sound like a form of seizure activity known as Simple or Complex Partial seizures. I think it's something you may need to have checked out.

interesting...you know I felt like it was something like that....but I have to say I haven't had an episode in a few years, since I've been on meds, so now I just wonder what the heck that was all about
I had seizures as an infant and was on phenobarbital which was discontinued after 6 mos.
I wonder if its related...or probably not at all

I had the most bizarre symptoms and never saw a doctor...I'm not sure I cared at all
thanks for the info

I must have seemed like such a freak when it happened at school or work though.
It happened in a chemistry class to me once, and I just stood there while people spoke to me trying to wait the damn thing out, and I couldn't do a thing.
Then another time I answered the phone at work and I couldn't say anything.
....weird

I had a family member that had the type of episodes you describe - theirs was altered preception with a feeling of deja vu, difficulty verbalizing, weird sensations, sometimes strange repetive mouth movements, and nausea. The episode was always followed by a terrible headache. They progressed to a more intense episode when it was diagnosed but the episodes above happened several years before the "big one". They take Trileptol and have been fine ever since.... Thankfully.

oh my god...I can't believe that you just described that, it was so similar to mine except without the nausea (probably) and the mouth movements
It hasn't been a problem in a while, but I'm wondering.....
What was the "big one"?

another question for you Glydin if you're willing.

You mentioned your relative went on trileptal, and has been doing well...I was just wondering if this experience correlates with the more 'psychiatric' symptoms, and if this person might have experienced anxiety, depression, etc. like me?
so many of the antiepileptics used in psych disorders ya know....
Thanks for responding, I'm glad you did. :-)

I can't speak for Glydin but a big one to me would be a grand mal seizure. That is when your body starts to jerk around. Call your doc and get an EEG. It doesn't hurt just messy they stick things on your head with a jelly like subastace. I would do this just to make sure you are okay. Fondly, Phillipa

Well...I would, but it has been a great while since I've experienced these symptoms, but they were so strange that I wonder if something was just not right. It wasn't something I ever heard anyone else describe, but they are in my past. There was a while after that I think that I started smoking a lot of marijuana, then I eventually went on the meds and stopped the pot...so maybe the symptoms stopped on their own, maybe the chemicals in my body helped? it's been years so I think I'm safe.
There was that mom above who asked about a somewhat peculiar symptoms so it made me think of this one...the one I don't usually talk about in mixed company ;-)

No problem, I think the really good thing about forums like this is realizing others have experienced similar things. While this didn't happen to me, I was and am very involved so I feel almost like it happened to me as it was very impacting to someone I cared very much about.

The big event was indeed a grand mal seizure. Initially, when the small events were noticed it was chalked up to an anxiety issue - not officially diagnosed as such, but the family history could make that a really good assumption. Once the "big" seizure happened, we discovered these events were seizure activity. Major tests of EVERY variety were done and any structural, metabolic, infection etc.... cause was ruled out. EEG's and sleep deprived EEG's were all within normal limits. So, a cause was never actually determined.

Trileptol was begun for seizure control. Yes, there is much crossover with headmeds. Historywise, they had not been officially diagnosed with a mental illness but the family history is landmined genetically for depression and anxiety. The Tri has been well tolerated and two years since the big event, no further incidents.... Praises be.

Discussing this with your doc wouldn't be a bad idea. If it is seizure activity, there's not a rule it will progress but there is a chance.

Take good care of yourself.
