Is Catnip safe????

Posted by cablegirl on December 29, 2005, at 15:34:20

Does anyone give catnip to their cat??? I have never let my cat have it before, but I decided to put some in his Christmas stocking this year. I gave him some on Christmas night and it was the funniest thing! My husband and I laughed so hard that our sides hurt!!! But he acted really strange afterwards and has even seemed "not quite himself" this whole week!!! I HOPE IT DIDN'T HARM HIM!!! I feel really silly asking this......but does anybody have a bad or good catnip experience to share???

Hi Cablegirl,

I've never heart that catnip hurts a cat. My vet told me that their liking it is genetic. Two out of my three walk away from it without a sniff. The catnip lover is 12 and it's nice to see her play with a toy like a kitten again.

Catnip grows in my yard, so she gets fresh stuff in summer. She's afraid to go outside which is good as I think an actual plant would put her over the edge. One of the others does play outside and naps in the catnip. Get her near a feather toy or a live bird and watch out. Catnip- ZZZ.

My cat Psycho loves her fix of catnip. It's very good for digestion as it's in the mint family and unlike houseplants will not make your cat puke. If I remember to I give her some every week. Otherwise she gets some sprinkled on her cardboard scratching thingy which keeps it her favourite place to sleep.

My cat gets very playful and silly with catnip but can be a mean drunk if your hand gets too close. It's the only time she'll take a swipe at me. I have heard of other peoples' cats having no reaction whatever to the stuff. I once had a cat who would start to drool when he'd play in it.

I don't know if it's safe or not, but my cat LeRoi, absolutely loved it. I swear he was stoned out of his mind every time I gave it to him-- eyes would dialate, he'd drool, just lay on his back and look at nothing...

Thanks for all the feedback! Sounds like it is safe! It sure was fun watching my big fat lazy 22 pound cat run around and act like a "physco kitty"! I feel much better about it now and think I will give him some more tonight!

THANKS AGAIN EVERYBODY!!!

hi cablegirl,
I give it to my cats sometimes and they like it for about 3-4 minutes, then get bored. As they get older, they react less and less to it. This saddens me, because it was so fun to watch them leap and cavort around!

I don't THINK it's dangerous...can you ask your vet? The only thing that might be a problem is if the vendor "cuts" the catnip with another substance, and that might make a cat ill. For instance, I bought some cheap catnip once and I'm pretty sure there was shredded cardboard in it, or sawdust. If the cat ate that, it might have upset their stomach...
