Is Catnip safe????

Does anyone give catnip to their cat??? I have never let my cat have it before, but I decided to put some in his Christmas stocking this year. I gave him some on Christmas night and it was the funniest thing! My husband and I laughed so hard that our sides hurt!!! But he acted really strange afterwards and has even seemed "not quite himself" this whole week!!! I HOPE IT DIDN'T HARM HIM!!! I feel really silly asking this......but does anybody have a bad or good catnip experience to share???
