I think I understand what I did wrong

Posted by Deneb on September 12, 2005, at 0:35:56

I think that I "get" why people were so upset at what I wrote.

I think that maybe joking about death or making light of death by suicide is like a person joking around or making light of sexual abuse or something. I get that...that would be very inappropriate and horrible for abuse survivors.

I'm sorry people.

GG was right about the escalation of behaviour thing too...mine escalated.

I hope Dr. Bob can forgive me.

I'm going to get some help though...it was scary cuz the counselor at the student counseling centre must have freaked out or something. She made me go see a doctor immediately...thank goodness I said the right things and the doctor decided I didn't have to go to the hospital after all! Yikes!!

I'm going to see my p-doc's replacement in less than 2 weeks now...I'm scared.

I have really really really bad coping skills.
That's what I overheard the p-doc said when i was in the hospital.

I sent some really inappropriate e-mails to Dr. Bob the first week I was blocked.

I also bothered GG quite a bit too.

I'm sorry. I need to learn to cope better. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Deneb,

I think it helps to find a really good therapist, either a woman or a man, with whom you feel comfortable.

I meant to ask you before. . . Do you like to exercise? I love swimming, and I find it really helps change my mood. I'm usually in a foul mood when I wake up in the morning. If I didn't swim or do some other exercise, I don't know how I'd cope. Exercise is one of my coping mechanisms. It helps to dissipate a lot of negative energy.

I was also wondering about your classes? Are you taking any astronomy classes this semester? When you are immersed in classes you enjoy, such as astronomy, do you find that some of the negative thoughts disappear?

S.

The student counseling centre won't see me. :-(
I guess I'm too disordered for them or something. :-(

I think they are going to refer me to somewhere else. I didn't think I was that disordered...:-(

> I meant to ask you before. . . Do you like to exercise?

Unfortunately I never got into liking exercise much. I think it started in elementary school when I used to throw up every time we had physical education class.

>I love swimming, and I find it really helps change my mood. I'm usually in a foul mood when I wake up in the morning. If I didn't swim or do some other exercise, I don't know how I'd cope.

I don't know how to swim. :-( It might be fun to learn though. :-)

> I was also wondering about your classes? Are you taking any astronomy classes this semester?

No, astronomy is only a personal hobby of mine. I'm taking mainly molecular biology, physiology, biochem and organic chem classes.

> When you are immersed in classes you enjoy, such as astronomy, do you find that some of the negative thoughts disappear?

Hmmm...yes actually...when I'm immersed in a class I enjoy I concentrate only on the subject discussed. I guess I should attend class as much as I can then! Studying helps me too. I should get started! Classes started on Thurs. Sept. 8th.

Thanks for the suggestions

The first step to getting better is acknowledging that there is an issue to work on. Hang in there!

I'm glad to hear you are working on yourself.

Isn't it just a pain to have to work so hard at something that seems to be so natural for everyone else???

I think most of us here can relate to that in some way or another.

I hope you continue to learn, thrive, and progress and become all the person you hope to be!

Glad you're back.

Perhaps the student counseling services are primarily for problems arising strictly from school-related matters? I don't know, I'm just guessing.

Does your school offer physical education classes? It sounds as if you have a very busy schedule, so maybe you wouldn't be able to fit a phys. ed. class into your schedule. How about walking fast? Do you have to do a lot of walking in between classes? Do you walk to school, drive or take public transportation? Maybe you can take a swimming class during winter break. How about dancing? Do you like to dance?

Wow! I'm impressed!!! Which organic textbook are you using? And what about your biochem book? Are you using Lehninger or Stryer? I really like the book by Stryer.

Perhaps you are closer to your real self when you are able to immerse yourself fully in the subject. When you're able to concentrate well, when you're "in the moment," that is who you are. That is the REAL you. On the other hand, when you have those negative thoughts (or, what you referred to as "disordered" thoughts), maybe that's when you're fighting another version of you, not the real you, but a version that was superimposed on you a long time ago, and it remained there, out of habit.

I'm glad you're taking all those fascinating classes. You're going to learn so much this year. Pretty soon, you'll be explaining biochemistry and physiology concepts to us on the Psychobabble med board. One of the things I like most about science classes is applying what we learn to real-life problems.

If you have time, please let us know about your class work, etc. I'm very interested to hear what texts you're using. I'd like to hear about the lectures and labs, too, but I know you're very busy, so only if you have time.

Sarah

> Perhaps the student counseling services are primarily for problems arising strictly from school-related matters? I don't know, I'm just guessing.

I think that's their main focus. They also do personal counselling, but it's short term.
I've been through some personal counselling there already in first year, it didn't work out...maybe that is why they won't see me. :-(

> Does your school offer physical education classes? It sounds as if you have a very busy schedule, so maybe you wouldn't be able to fit a phys. ed. class into your schedule.

I'm too self conscious to participate in a class like that.

> How about walking fast? Do you have to do a lot of walking in between classes?

I sure have to climb a lot of stairs to get to my classes this semester. ;-)

>Do you walk to school, drive or take public transportation? Maybe you can take a swimming class during winter break. How about dancing? Do you like to dance?

I don't have my driver's license yet...pathetic (for me) I know. I took classes, but chickened out with the test.

> Wow! I'm impressed!!!

Nope, you shouldn't be...I'm only a general science student now and I should have graduated already. I used to be in the Bio-pharmaceutical Science Honours program (Genomics option)...but I had to drop out of that and switch because I failed some prereqs.

I'm got hopeful the fall of 2004 when I got an 8.7 GPA (out of 10), but that doesn't erase my skipping exams and dropping classes in previous years. At this point, I know I'm not going to do anything big with my degree when I get it...what can I possibly do with a general science degree? I'm basically screwed, but I'm still trying for some reason.

>Which organic textbook are you using?

I'm using an older textbook (not the one my class if using):

"Organic Chemistry Clayden" et al.

>And what about your biochem book? Are you using Lehninger or Stryer?

I'm not actually taking biochem this semester so I don't know yet.

I'm also using:

"Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts et al.

That's a pretty popular textbook.

> Perhaps you are closer to your real self when you are able to immerse yourself fully in the subject.

Perhaps...
I remember going to class in great distress...but then during the lecture I was no longer in distress...I just forgot to be sad I guess. ;-)

>Pretty soon, you'll be explaining biochemistry and physiology concepts to us on the Psychobabble med board.

Oh, I don't know about that! I'm a lowly undergrad! The plant physiology class might be of some use...

>One of the things I like most about science classes is applying what we learn to real-life problems.

Me too. :-)
Science rules!
