Serious question, need answers

Is it wrong to cry at work? Is it wrong for everyone to know you cried? Thanks.

Unfortunately, despite my greatest efforts, I have ended up crying and sobbing at work whether I liked it or not. (quite a few times I guess) I try to hide it, but SOMEBODY always seems to notice. and not just a graceful tear, but full on hyperventilating, messy, sloppy, downright unpretty crying.
Is it wrong?- I certainly don't think so.
Is it wrong to have everyone know you cried?- I don't think so.

But the question that strikes me is:
Does it suck sometimes to have people know you're upset?-absolutely

Hopefully these people will be supportive or something close to accepting of difficult emotions. It's quite impossible to leave your life or emotions outside the door when you walk into work. Oh how I wish I could!! You never quite know how people will react to you, sometimes it's surprising in a good way when people can appreciate your humanity.
I hope all is well Angela.

PS I'd give you a nice cup of tea and extra soft tissues and extra break time. :-)

I think this happens more than we know. I know it has happened to a few of my friends. I dont think it is wrong. If it happens a lot it may be, I guess. But I have had a sales person start to cry in front of me and explained she was having a bad day. Not wrong. Are you ok?

I don't think its a matter of 'wrong'...
But I hate it when that happens.

I'm w/ Alex. Of course it is a little hard for me to say b/c I've been a student for many, many years. Perhaps, in some ways, an easier time to burst into tears.

My "tip" is that I always have a little makeup w/ me to fix myself up. Extra (waterproof) eyeliner, pressed facial powder, and bright lipstick (draws attn away from red eyes). If I know it is going to be a hard day, I wear my glasses instead of contacts so that it is hides my eyes a little more. Hmmmm...do you get the idea that I have been in this situation once or twice?

And ALWAYS have one of those tiny packs of tissues with you.

Is everything okay w/ you?

Best,
EE

Hi everyone, thanks for your responses. I'm glad it's ok to cry at work. Sleepygirl, mine was the waterworks kind too. LOL. I'll write more later. Thanks.

Oh my...You're right...we DO have a ton in common. I do the same thing, especially on therapy days.

I hate crying in front of work or other folks who are not my loved ones. I get embarrassed. I often cry when I am really mad. Although it seems since I've been a bit better lately at expressing my anger (screaming banshee aside), I haven't had as many crying in public episodes.

I hope that what is leading you to cry eases up some.

Do you remember my posts last year entitled 'crying at my desk'? I think there were a lot of them!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with expressing your emotions. I mean, crying is a physical reaction. Obviously its something your body needs to do. I agree its embarrassing, and I would do anything to be able to control it. But maybe by crying we're adverting something worse, like going postal on our co-workers.

I tend to do it when I'm mad or really, really frusterated. I hope things are better for you now. If not, write and let us know. That's what we're all here for.
