Canine sensitivity

Posted by Sonya on August 15, 2005, at 12:35:36

I wonder how many other dog owners experience this...

My dog (a border collie) could be in another room in my house but when I start silently crying, he'll immediately come to me, put his front paws in my lap and whine while looking me directly in the eyes. It never fails to amaze me how in tune he is to my feelings.

Is this common or is he a miracle?

My cat does the same thing, and she's not a clingy pet. I think we are very lucky pet owners!

The same thing happens to me, only my dog JUST WON'T QUIT, he climbs into my lap and relentlessly licks my face, and if the crying gets bad he starts shivering and whining. At first I thought I was imagining a connection, desperate for comfort, but I've noticed if a friend of mine that he too loves very much is sad when they stop by he sits directly in front of them and tilts his head from side to side or licks their face. My dog is almost -too- human at times.

If it were common and everyone owned an animal like this there probably wouldn't be so much lonlieness in the world.

Just to keep you grounded about the puppy thing....

Don't get me wrong - I adore my dog. He's a wonderful companion but, on the downside, he's got separation anxiety and can't be left alone in the house without destroying something. He once ripped up wall-to-wall carpeting in my familyroom! But do I regret having him? NO WAY!

So you have to weigh the pros with the cons.
