can i use anxiety for energy

Posted by rjlockhart98 on July 22, 2005, at 0:36:31

Ok, if you want to get a good description of me when i have a panic.

From Alien (1979) when Ripley (Siquorney Weaver) is running like hell through the hallways to the shuttle becuase she didnt shut off the self destruct sequence, with this alien thing that just killed 2 more people. If you havent seen it watch it. You will see what i mean

Anyways, instead of sitting or pacing maybe i should use that worry to go do things that need to be done. I can get very Proactive when i am on emergency mode.

Does anyone else have panic attacks similar to this?

No, but I'd use that energy if you can. Do you excercise? Fondly, Phillipa

I workout, and run everyday. This is something that will make it release, it will exhaust the body to a point it cant panic.

I actually jog to the Gym work out for an hour-2 then jog back. Its about 1(1/2)-2 miles away.

This is what i use when im in emergency mode.

but i was meaning doing things like, everyday things that need to be done. I cant slow down, so i might as well do as many things that can be finished.

You are fortunate that can focus and direct your anxious energy. I never could. Whether it was the generalized type or especially with panic attacks, I was NEVER able to do anything constructive with it - mentally or phyically. It was always the "freeze up - I can't concentrate on anything but these awful feelings" variety.

I would say that from a evolutionary point of view, anxiety existed specifically to get things done. Your stress hormones raise in preparation for some energetic event - fight or flight... so why not at least TRY to be constructive? That's hard, but it would be nice.

Also, negative views towards something is a motivating factor in change. If you weren't anxious about things, you might not ever get things done right. Anxiety does have a purpose and it can be used constructively. Panic attacks, obviously, don't have much evolutionary use, so I can't comment on that... Anyway, generally speaking, most of us go to this board because our anxieties are dysfunctional, thus eliminating (for the most part) the possibility of constructively utilizing anxious feelings.

I tend to get constructive though, when I'm angry. Usually I actually can get a lot done when I'm really pissed at myself. That's the evolutionary advantage of anger.

I would agree. There is intelligence behind these emotions.

Anger at myself has always been the emotion that pushes me to try and try again and again to regain the emotional strength I once had. Just Do It! Fondly, Phillipa

Well, I used to say that if it weren't for the energy that comes with anxiety, I'd have no energy at all.

But it wasn't particularly productive.

And now that I routinely fall asleep when upset, it's even less productive.
