Ok, maybe in calling it an 'addiction' it is problematic by definition. But what is wrong with preferring to spend time with people in the virtual world over preferring to spend time with people in the real world?
I mean, I can see how it could be a problem if it interfeares with your real world committments and relationships. But, well if it prevents you meeting new real world people because you can't be bothered as you have company when you want. Well, then what is wrong with that?

Thanks, that was great!
But instead of wondering why people are avoiding the 'real world' why aren't we wondering why people are avoiding the 'virtual world'?

There is no warm skin here. No sound of a beating heart under my ear. Nothing to smell, or taste. No eyes to look into.
Virtual I don't need. Real I do.

There is also the point that one does have to live in the real world to a certain extent (to sleep, eat, go to the bathroom, take ones medication, go to work or whatever). I don't suppose that one can forsake the real world completely, whereas people survived before the internet came along! But yeah, real people can be good too.
Maybe we even need them sometimes (ugh)

Is somebody giving you a rough time about how much time you spend in cyberworld? My family thinks I'm addicted to the internet. I talked to my former pdoc a long time ago about it and his reply was "there are far worse things to be addicted to". I spend a lot of time online. I have no IRL friends. I'm very shy and I don't have the resources to go out and do things to meet people. I feel a lot more comfortable talking to people online. However; I have had more than my fair share of trouble talking to people online (not talking about PB). I try to not get too involved with other msg boards or ngs anymore for that reason.

Well no nobody is giving me a hard time. But I do find that I am embarrassed to tell people just how much time I do spend on it (especially on this site). Also a bit worried of how I was when ITS went and stuffed up my access (I kind of borrowed someone elses account without their knowledge I am ashamed to admit). Also worried that ITS will block me from this site if they decide to manually check just what it is that I am on for so very often.
And then I realise that when my flatmates / friends want me to go out with them and do stuff, or just hang with them I say something evasive and come and babble with you guys :-)
But, no I am not too bothered about it really. I am having a ball.

I thought addiction, by definition, was something that caused you a problem in your life.
If it's not causing you any problems isn't it just a hobby?

heh heh, yeah I wondered whether calling it an 'addiction' meant that it was a problem by definition.
Hobby. I like that :-)

Well, I have to admit that I would be very embarrassed to tell anybody how much time I spend on the internet. I'll be very evasive and just reply "a lot".
I hope you don't get caught. My use is all at home, so I thankfully, don't have anybody else to answer to. If *I* am not bothered by how much time I spend online, then why should anybody else have the right to tell me I spend too much. I don't tell them they spend too much time on whatever they do. To each their own I say. ;)
