Body Parts....Revisited

Posted by AdaGrace on October 11, 2004, at 13:11:50

Can I tell you something funny about body parts to brighten your day?

When I got burned two weeks ago, I had to "take a bath" while the male nurse and my husband watched. Actually, I was taken in that bathroom on the pretence of showing me and my husband how to change my bandages. The male nurse (he must have been new, becuase he fidgited a lot) anyway, he gets in there, I am sitting on the chair for old people who can't stand in the shower and have my backless gown on. The male nurse proceeds to put on all this garb including a face shield. Now, I'm thinking, what are you protecting your face for? What exactly do you think is going to come flying out of me that might splatter onto your face? Anyway I guess I thought I was going to take my little sponge bath myself and then we could do the bandage thing. After all, I have to lift things up and wash under them. Mind you I have had three kids and many people have seen this body, as flabby and unatractive as it may be, and I really don't think I have much modesty left, but this bothered me. OF course they turned away, while I sat there mortified, lifting my ta-tas up to wash under them. After I was done, I asked if I could dry off and put my gown back on, and he said, no, we are going to change your bandages now. Now, I am thinking, why do I need to sit here naked so you can change my bandages? The burns were on my LOWER legs and my LOWER arms and face. Anyone who has ever worn one of those hospital gowns knows that they cover at least the other areas, and I was sitting down, so the bum was covered. At least when you go to the gyno you get a paper towel to cover up with. This was rediculous. Someone should have told him that 40 year old flabby women don't like to take a shower or bath with an audience unless they are a famous porn star with great attributes. Anyway he finally felt sorry for me and handed me a towel so I wasn't flapping in the breeze. As I look back on it now, In a different frame of mind I might have liked getting naked in front of a 20 something doctor wanna be....mabe with a few glasses of wine...

Still not sure what that face shield was for.

Maybe he was afraid you'd throw soap in his eyes to keep him from taking a look??

How could he take the bandages off my legs and arms without seeing.....they do hang so low.....which reminds me of something my daughter said the other day. I haven't been able to get a bra on for several days and of course my thin t-shirt revealed all the nasty little details. She said and I quote... "MOM!!!, IS that your boobs down there?"

I can beat that story. I remember in 3rd grade I was doing a school project on the Arctic and how the Eskimos lived off the land - these were the days before First Nations, so we called them Eskimos. I was fascinated at how they used different parts of whales. I looked at my mom's stomach and asked her if that was blubber. I couldn't figure out why she sent me to my room...

Laughing pretty hard now :)

Burns are open wounds. Any virus you have will be in the wound tissue and dressings. A tiny particle of anything arising in your body, landing on the moist tissue of the eye, for example, would expose him. It might look dorky, and it's probably embarassing to don the equipment, but it really is a prudent precaustion for someone exposed to patients routinely. Hep C, etc. are for life.

Reminds me of a joke.

Q: What does a seventy year old woman have between her breasts that a teenager does not?

A: Her navel.

Thanks ever so much........

by the way, if he had to put on the face shield and garb like he was going into outer space, why didn't my husband have to put anything on?

It's probably a condition of employment, because of occupational health and safety law or regulations. Every day, health care workers are exposed to many many sick people. Expect to see more precautions like that.

Hospital workers are themselves walking incubators who carry diseases from one patient to another. Anti-infection measures are very important in a hospital environment. It could have been to protect you from exposure to him, while you were wet, and most vulnerable to aerosol vectored infection.

Your husband has probably been exposed to you already, eh? ;-)

hi, grace (pretty name), :)

sorry it took me so long to get back to you. i had to do some quick chores before my bf gets home (and i still have more to do..blech).

<As I look back on it now, In a different frame of mind I might have liked getting naked in front of a 20 something doctor wanna be....mabe with a few glasses of wine...

*love* your sense of humor and personality!

> Still not sure what that face shield was for.

<giggle> that is hilarious! really good story! yeah, what *was* the face shield for?? :-)

i personally hate hospitals..i can't believe that doctor-to-be wouldn't let you put your gown on..please. and the fact that they had to stand there while you took a bath..some people are really clueless. sorry you had to go through that embarassment..:) and i really feel for you that you've been burned..:( this must be such a hard time for you. i'm glad you're here and we can chat and hopefully try to help you through this! i can't imagine experiencing burns like that and the pain of recovery. and i read in another of your posts that your husband wasn't too supportive..complaining about his little aches and pains to put the focus on him when *you've been burned*! i wish i could give you a hug. (((((((((grace))))))))))

amy :-)

Well the embarasment was short lived, and actually kinda humorous now that I retell the story, it was the pain that was and is longlasting. I've had 3 kids, and 4 surgeries and one painful jaw locking experience and nothing compared to this. Anyway, thanks for your response....nice to meet you.....

Well, here's the thing Larry, he had this garb on including the face shield whilst I was cleaning myself...BEFORE he helped me with the bandages and if I was that germ ridden, wouldn't he wear it when he came in my room to check my vitals?

Never mind, don't answer that, I already know the answer anyway, and my sarcasm is lost here in type land.

My almost 7 year old son knows my desperate bid to lose weight. He pats my hips every morning and asks "Are they still fat?"
