Burns are open wounds. Any virus you have will be in the wound tissue and dressings. A tiny particle of anything arising in your body, landing on the moist tissue of the eye, for example, would expose him. It might look dorky, and it's probably embarassing to don the equipment, but it really is a prudent precaustion for someone exposed to patients routinely. Hep C, etc. are for life.
