My week with my little guy (long and rambling)

Posted by All Done on July 26, 2004, at 2:07:32

Okay. So, I've been home with my son for approximately three weeks and I have yet to post a Mommy story. Now, I'm sure there are those of you waiting on the edge of your seats for one ;), so here it goes. Proceed to be inundated.

The last week was so much fun for us. We saw Laurie Berkner ("Victor Vito") at a book signing where she sang (it was a small place and only a handful of children were there). My son, N, and his cousin really enjoyed it. Then, we saw her in concert at an outdoor venue the next day. It rained a bit, but it was still a blast.

We went to a children's farm where N went on pony rides, a train, a carousel, saw baby piglets, and lots of other cute animals.

We went swimming. All he wants to do is jump off of the steps into my arms and go underwater.

We went out for ice cream with his aunts and cousins.

We drove to Michigan for the day to see a friend that just moved there and is terribly sad and feeling lonely. We brought her daughter and N to a children's museum.

And finally, on Friday - our day of “rest” - I locked myself out of the house...with N locked inside! Here's what happened:

We were just being lazy that morning, both still in our pajamas. I noticed N needed a diaper change and I remembered I left the wipes in the car from our road trip the day before. I went out the door to the garage and the minute I closed it behind me, I realized it was locked. Oh, the words that went through my head! I went around the house to see if there were any open windows or unlocked doors, but I pretty much already knew the answer to that question. N was still in the living room sitting on the couch when I went to the neighbor's house (in my pajamas) and used their phone to call a locksmith. They said they would be there in about 15 - 20 minutes. So, my friend and her father came back to my house with me to wait. Her father tried to open the door with a credit card but had no success. My friend and I went to the dining room window to watch N to see if there was a need to break a window to get back in. The first thing we saw was him crawling up on the piano bench and playing the piano. When he quickly tired of that, he set up his t-ball set and proceeded to play t-ball in the house. When I yelled through the window for him to set up his bowling set, he did and I believe he got a strike. Having, obviously, the attention span of a two-year old, he then dragged his rocking horse from the front room to the living room and rocked on that for approximately 20 seconds. He watched a little TV and came back to the window by me. He announced that he would be using the “potty” and headed off to the bathroom. (Now, I suppose I should mention that he is still in diapers and has never properly used the potty. He walks into the bathroom, stands in front of the toilet, lifts up his shirt, plays with his belly button (yes, his belly button), flushes the toilet, and puts the lid down. I imagine this was exactly what he did, but at this point, I could not see him from the window.) As he came back from the potty, my neighbor’s dad came back with a different, apparently sturdier, credit card and popped the lock open. (Kind of scary in itself. I have started using the deadbolt at all times.)

I immediately went in the house, checked on N who was doing just fine – perhaps even enjoying the freedom? – called the locksmith to cancel, and changed N’s diaper. Then, we had lunch.

Thank goodness that evening my husband came home from a week out of town for work. We had a great week, but Friday’s incident leads me to believe I was ready for some adult assistance.

Wish me luck this week ;).

Talk about an action-packed week! Your locked-house story must have scared you at the time, but the visual of your N playing with his belly button in front of the toilet made my day! What a great mom you are.

What a wonderful mom you are! And it sounds like you were well more traumatized Friday than your son was. You must be proud of him. :)

Now, make sure you let your husband get lots of bonding time with your son this week. And if you happen to squeeze in some bubble baths or shopping while they're doing the guy things, well....

(He sounds adorable.)

What a great kid! And what a great mom!

Credit cards are cheaper than locksmiths. Hmmm... maybe I should reconsider that sentance...

Thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like an action-packed week! I'm glad that your lock out ended up okay. Sounds like quite an exciting way to end your week. And I'm glad your hubby is home now to help out.

I once locked my car with the engine running and the dog in it! That was no fun. At least I lived in an apt. complex where I could get back into my apt. and make some calls.

Take care,
gg

Oh, GG, I've done that too! Doh! I don't have a dog, but I did lock the car with the engine running. Fortunately, it wasn't too far from home, and it was a Saturday. So I called my husband, who biked over and unlocked it for me. And made me feel like a complete idiot.

A long time ago, when I was 18, my best friend was getting married, and in the parking lot of the church he locked his keys in his truck while it was running, right before the wedding. We were running late, so he had to just leave it running through the ceremony. LOL!

Laurie that sounds like a nearly perfect week. And your little guy sounds so wonderful! I'm glad you're getting to spend so much fun time with him. He's probably really enjoying it. I was really enjoying your account of it anyway.

That sounds like an adventure... The same thing happened to my cousin a few years ago, probably when her son was about the same age as yours is. Oh yeah, remember this story (especially the part about the potty) for the first time your son brings a girl home to meet you :)

I'm glad you've been having a great time with your son, other than that little adventure. By the way, I still haven't gotten to see the pictures!

Aww, thanks PC. You are very sweet! You know, everytime I see N in the bathroom, I have to laugh. It makes my day, too! :)

Thanks, Dinah! I am *very* proud of my little guy. He's such a good little boy.

Well, I had a girls night out with some of my friends this week while Daddy took N to the park and swimming to give me a little free time. Oh, and this weekend I'm going to a movie with my girlfriend. Do you know how long it's been since I've seen a movie in a movie theater?? I can't wait.

Is your son feeling better? I hope so. I know how difficult that can be. Take care of the two of you. (((Dinah)))

Thanks, falls! :) You are too funny! Unfortunatly, my credit cards would have the locksmith beat by a mile :0.

I hope you're doing well. Your T is on vacation, right? Let us know if you need any extra support, okay? Here's a hug for good measure (((((falls))))).

Oh my gosh! Glad your doggie ended up safe. I do stuff like this all the time :(. One time I was driving my friends home from an evening downtown. We were on the expressway but in a not-so-nice neighborhood. I ran out of gas and it was pouring rain. When no one stopped to help (pre-cell phone days) we all decided we would get out and walk to the nearest exit together as opposed to leaving anyone in the car. The minute I shut the door, I realized I just locked the keys in the car! I started hyperventilating, but my friends were able to calm me down just as someone stopped to help. What a nice man he was :).

I swear, sometimes I leave my brain in the shower in the morning ;).

Thanks, pegasus! It was *such* a nice week. This week hasn't been quite so busy, but we've still been having a lot of fun (and no big "incidents" so far :).)

You are so right, lg! I've already journalled this into his scrapbook which will always be out for his date's viewing pleasure ;). He'll just love me, huh?

Sorry it took me a while to send you the link for the pictures. Thanks for reminding me! I'm telling you guys, I can be such a scatter brain sometimes.

AllDone,

Wow! I've done lots of childcare for all ages under ten and with the wee ones I'm extra vigilant. If I had done that I would have flipped out!!! Thank goodness you were calm and your neighbour doubles as a cat burglar with his credit card finesse. ; )

You and your boy are having some of those memorable days that you are much in need of! Enjoy them to the fullest. But don't forget to have a great time W/O the husband and superson at the movies with your girlfriends.

Girlfriend time cannot be replaced. Yeehaw and be 'childfree' for those few hours!!

it is too funny just imagining how cute he was taking care of himself while you ran around peering in the windows lol
