Hi-
I am lucky (like many of you) to have an amazing psychiatrist. Just wondering if any of you have ideas for a small, appropriate holiday gift...all of the "World's #1 Psychiatrist" t-shirts at the mall seem so impersonal!
I figure I buy gifts for people who are A LOT less important to me, and maybe I should send him a token of my appreciation. Any opinions on whether this is a good/bad idea are also welcome.
Thanks!

truman,My father was a psychiatrist who passed away when I was young. I still have memories of the gifts he had received from his patients. Some were of the tacky world's #1 pdoc variety but most were either handmade or extemely humourous.
I still have about four or five items in my daily life that I see or use all the time that were gifts made by one of his patients. This is two decades after his death.
So if you're asking if a shrink cares? Yeah, from going through his stuff after he died he had a lot of gifts from patients all over his office.
I personally think it is quite thoughtful of you and hope you have a good holiday season.
zenhussy --who usually writes out a thank you note for the therapist or pdoc who goes the extra mile in helping me. They've definitely made a difference in my life and I let them know my gratitude whenever I'm able to show any.

Male or female? Mine's female. She really liked the slice of soap I gave her. You know, one of those handmade scented ones that have the different colored sutff included in them that make patterns and they come in logs and you buy a slice. (Did that makes sense? I'm not sure what they're called.) I figured it was appropriately small and pretty. I think I gave the same thing to her office manager, who's also been terrific.
For a man...? Does he like coffee? How about some really good coffee beans?
Attractive stationery is always in good taste.
A little plant?

Truman,
Most Dr's won't accept gifts these days. There are some real legal issues involved and most of them think that its crossing an ethical professional line. I would make sure its small and rather generic...like the coffee (personal but not a gold watch :). Let me know what you decide.

I agree that the handmade ones are usually the most significant to a shrink- a framed poem, a thank you in neeedlepoint or even just a letter expressing how much your shrink has helped you. Anything more (and this from someone who gave a bottle of Dom Perignon (sp?) when manic- see last year's posts?) usually isn't accepted.
take care, judy

I found this mug that says "Trust me, I'm a doctor" that I thought about giving to my shrink. I think it's funny and I think he'd think it is funny, too.... but I don't think that I'm going to give it to him after all.
It's a difficult issue, what with the possibility of them reading into it, or not accepting a gift.
This is the end of the thread.
