AAAUGH! My job!

Posted by bookgurl99 on July 24, 2003, at 8:03:51

Right when I started talking about getting accomodations for my migraines, my company has been taken over (in a 'friendly' takeover) by another company!

Basically, the call center I work at has had high turnover and poor quality ratings. (Except of course for moi; my annual review just gave me a 'rating' of over 90%.) This is due largely, I think, to poor management. (They make anyone feel like they could be fired 'just because' -- and some people have been -- so people stop caring.)

The company we subcontracted for has stepped in to manage the center, probably to save money and up the quality.

They've said that we will all be offered jobs, but I'm scared that I made too much noise and will now be cut due to having blabbed my migraine info to h.r.

There are not many jobs in my area (like everywhere) due to the economy and state deficit.

My plan? Power dress, be quiet, be a worker bee and disappear into the crowd. Also, never ever mention migraines again.

Sound good?

Sounds like a good plan for right now... just to get over the takeover, and get the job.

But what did you say to HR? Did you say the migranies were affecting your work? That you wanted to go on disability?

If you just need extra help for appointment, it should be fine. HR should not disclose something so personal...

Maybe I am wrong, I am not a lawyer... anyone else know anything?

No; just that I want to be 'accomodated' to the point that if I'm absent due to one, it doesn't count against my record. (This has been worked out for employees with seizure disorder, for example.)

Luckily, my work has remained largely unaffected. During a severe migraine last week, I was monitored and received a 100% rating! But now that I've talked about the migraines, I expect to be 'monitored' extra from now on and will always act as if I am being monitored on a call.

Sheesh. American culture has come to a new low when you have to hide things from your employer.

Ok... They have no right not to hire you back for that reason, I don't think....

Have you gotten any medication for the migraines? I have only had a couple of them and there is no way I could work, or even breath without being in pain....

But employers should understand that everyone has problems and you have to look at the individual not the group. At my work they have signs just by the door, that says if you need help with anything, like therapist, they have an account set up that you just call an outside number and they get you the appointment.

Now I have used that for a visit or two,.... but not my recent sessions, I can not use my work like that....

Speaking as a former manager, your excellent track record will speak louder than anything you could do now. Unless the world stops if one person is absent (and if it does, they need to reorganize the way they have things set up) they would rather have an excellent worker most of the time, than a poor worker all of the time.

I had one woman working for me who got incredible migraines every month. She had to go home. She was usually gone 4 - 6 hours and then came back to work. She told me about the migraines and how she would like to handle them. If she was working on something time critical she would show me or someone else where she was. She was always apologetic about leaving (but she didn't go on and on about it). I was very happy to have her in my group.

Good companies meet their employee's needs.

Good Luck

If you have a record of your informing them of your disability, it might actually protect you. They wouldn't want an ADA suit on their hands.

Or maybe I'm being naive.

Well managers from the new company (let's call it a large telecommunications company that you've heard of) came in to speak to us this week. They are offering all worker bees a job with the new company, and claim to expect to do the same with managers as well.

I got a 'verbal offer' of employment at the same job/same pay. So I feel ok. I guess it will be interesting to see what things are like when the new management is in.

On a plus note, because this is a huge company, there are better benefits and discounts for its employees. Like, very cheap long distance.

Good!

How about high speed broadband so you can pal around with us more efficiently?

Once the better health insurance kicks in (I hope that is included in the better benefits)--I hope you won't waste any time taking advantage of it for treating the headaches, etc.
