Anybody ever work at UPS?

Posted by bookgurl99 on June 23, 2003, at 23:51:41

I'm noticing that if I want to go to work for UPS in the Chicago area, I could get tuition reimbursement for college. Cha-ching!

The thing is, I'm noticeably out of shape. Think they'd take on a motivated fatty?

Never have. Like you I'm out of shape, plus too old.

A motivated fatty? You bet! I bet they'd take attitude over size anytime if your health is good. My niece told me the answer to why do you want this customer service type job is "I loooooooooove working with people!" So, now you're all set!

And, I love the UPS guy on Mad TV. Or was that Fed Ex on In Living Color?

Go for it and good luck!

Shar

I have no useful knowledge-- but go for it. You'd get to wear the little brown shorts set, and drive a panel truck, and get out in the sunshine, PLUS get some exercise.

I have a friend that worked for UPS in college, part time, sorting packages.

I'm not sure about the fitness thing, but I think it's just whether you can lift x pounds, something along those lines.

Now I have a reason behind my weight-lifting program. (I went from doing a 2-pound shoulder press to doing a 20-pounder this year.) :D

Maybe the job provides some of its own fitness after a while.

Awesome! I'm really impressed. If I can make myself exercise, I like to do weights, especially upper body stuff. It feels really good to be able to sling those heavy grocery bags rather than drag and huff and puff.

My friend was in really good shape by the time he left the UPS job. And I think, but I'm not sure, that the requirement is lifting 50 pounds. (I just remembered that he was in the Chicago area when he worked there!)

Have you ever heard of the super slow technique for lifting weights? You use a really slow controlled motion, and count to at least 10 for each movement (lifting and lowering). It really works the muscles and is incredibly effective.

I work for the US Postal Service, which is a competitor of UPS. I've never heard of ANY education reimbursements from UPS, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. As far as your physical shape: they, like the USPS,will require that you be in reasonable condition, but that mostly entails being physically able to lift up to a certain amount of weight. For the USPS,it is up to 70 pounds. That doesn't mean that you would be lugging 70 pound packages around all day, but you MAY have to handle one that heavy. As long as you pass their medical tests, they cannot discriminate against you because you are a little heavy. Will you get "shaped up"? That depends on exactly WHAT they would be hiring you to do, but most of my employees who carry mail ARE in good shape because they have to move quickly (insert your favorite post office joke here). My opinion: if it's a job you WANT and can physically DO, go for it!
