Yoga...Personal Trainer anyone??

Posted by jay on February 11, 2003, at 20:52:16

Anyone on here practice (formally) Yoga? I've heard some incredible things achieved by this from even a few friends who where able to change their lifestyles around quite a bit. (None with serious mental health disorders..but help with kicking smoking and cutting back (not eliminating) pain medication).

A few have also hired a Personal Fitness Trainer..some of the same folks I mentioned above. One of my friends admits he *hates* doing heavy cardio workouts at the gym (and even some running), but his Personal Trainer gets him to do it at not constant, but regular intervals.

Before all of this medication stuff, about 10 or so years ago, I had lost about 70 pounds through exercise and very *exact* calorie counting (I had a calculator that would measure each piece of food I ate..and charts to tell me how much physical fitness I would need to burn it off.) I looked and even felt pretty good. (Pretty dang good if you don't mind me saying..:-)

Now even some of my friends who live very *indulgent* lifestyles have really kept themselves in top shape with these things, and they are in their 50's. So I *really* think any of us, with the proper support, knowledge, and training, could benefit from this stuff. In the past 6-7 years, and I am only 33, I have basically spent my idle time sleeping, or too afraid to go outside. Maybe with some coaching and training..that could change. Kinda like a 'Therapist for the physical body'.

Thoughts?

Thanks....
Jay

Yoga is definitely worthwhile, if you have a good teacher. If you don't, it can hurt you (like any form of exercise).

With a good teacher, and a regular practice (no more than 10 minutes per day, one of my teachers said) I've known people to come back from serious chronic conditions (back and hip problems) to be healthy and strong.

This occurred whether or not the people embraced yogic teachings and vegetarianism. Some did, some did not, and all improved. Including me.

Now I am a mess again, thanks to this lovely dis-ease. I 'should' be doing yoga (or tai chi), but am not.

Shar..thanks for your response. I know when I am in the worst of this illness, Yoga would likely do little. Just like exercise. Going into my second decade with this, though, and having such a hard timne getting the right treatment and diagnosis (I am awaiting a proffesional psych consult), that these things could shield me from the deeper pain. I mostly suffer from extreme anxiety and deep social phobia, but I also happen to have my times where I can once-in-awhile be the *most* sociable person going. I also happen to think most of us have this potential..and I will keep others updated as to what I find does, and doesn't work.

Thanx,
Jay
