Help! I need motivation to exercise

Posted by babs on February 10, 2003, at 16:05:14

Help! I gained 60 pounds on risperdal and it makes me eat a lot. But the worst part of it is I have no motivation to exercise. I used to do yoga, walk, snowshoe, ski (I love to ski) and now I don't even have the motivation to ski. I just sit on my lazy butt all day. How do you all get motivated to exercise. I think the problem is that I used to exercise to get rid of tension and improve my mood but the vrisperdal takes away all the tension and boosts my mood so much that I feel like I don't need to exercise! The only thing that is even remotely appaeling right now is surfing and it is currently 20 degrees and snowing where I live. What happened to my motivation- I really want to lose thsi weight!

I will- I did a little internet research and came up with some good ideas. One was to post a picture of yourself in your slimmer days (if you've had them ;)lol) somewhere you can see it often. My other strategy is I bought a gorgeous bikini and I am going to hang it on my bedroom wall where I can see it and hopefully that will motivate me to fit into it this summer. Another thing I read was that people who exercise first thing in the a.m. are more likely to be consistent and stick with their exercise routine. The only time of day I feel anxious is first thing in the a.m. the rest of the day I am so mellow) so I'm hoping that morning anxiety will motivate me to try yoga in the a.m. to relax. I just can't believe I don't want to ski. I'd rather lie around and be cozy and I've never been like that before. My therapist(who is so wise ;)) says "First comes action, then motivation." Maybe I just need to get off my duff and do it even though I don't want to. Ugh! The other part of the equation is that I used to be a teacher and that REALLY stressed me out so I had to exercise to blow off steam. This year I've returned to school which I love and am not finding stressful at all so I have no steam to blow off! I'll let you know what I find out....

For a while, buying a membership at a gym was enough to get me exercising several days a week because, I was paying for it, darn it! But then I went broke, and there went my motivation. I try to get outside whenever possible though, even when it is snowy and cold. There's nothing like a good snowball fight to get your heart pumping :)

I've become a little more realistic in what I expect of myself too--like it is realistic I'll walk for 1/2 hr after work, not so realistic that I'll run 5 miles (since, no, I've never done this in my life).

Change up your routine too. Getting stuck in a rut has made me lose motivation.

And if you find the magic bullet...patent it and make millions...

Hi Babs,

> Help! I gained 60 pounds on risperdal and it makes me eat a lot.

ditto, but with depakote.

>But the worst part of it is I have no motivation to exercise.

likewise.

>How do you all get motivated to exercise.

1. have my therapist nag me.
2. have my pdoc nag me.
3. have my mdoc nag me.
4. get tired of shopping for ever larger shirts & pants before the old ones even show wear.
5. friends & coworkers tell me I look like I have been gaining weight.

(note: my wife never nagged me)

and finally (this is a long story):

I went to Slovenia in the former Yugoslavia in Sept 2001 for a vacation. Since the people I stayed with spoke very little English, they had a 20-year-old college girl stay over for a couple of nights to translate & make sure I was getting along OK. Having never visited the US, she had a million questions about everything. She asked me if everyone is really fat in the US. I said, yes, pretty much. (note that nearly all Slovene women are thin). Well, I am returning to Slovenia this summer, and I am sure I will meet the same college girl. The last thing I want is for her to look at me and tell me *I* got *fat* in just 2 years.

So...

Here is my exercise plan:

Mornings:

1. sit-ups and push-ups, usually 60 each. I do them until I can't do another.
2. lay flat on the floor on my back with arms out-stretched. Lift 5-lb (2 Kg) dumbells keeping my arms straight and my hands meeting over my chest. I do this 100 times.
3. repeat 2, but bend my arms at the elbows.
4. repeat 1, doing as many more sit-ups and push-ups as I can.

Noon (before lunch):

1. I work in a 2-story building, so I walk stairs up & down. I am currently doing 30 round-trips of 28 steps each in 15 minutes.
2. Cool off from the stairs with a 1 mile walk.

Evening:

1. Repeat the sit-ups and push-ups during commercial breaks when I am watching television. I use it as my penalty for numbing my brain.

I haven't lost any weight, but I have stopped gaining. :-)

Ted- That sounds like a great plan! Last night I was in Barnes and Noble and I was checking out the self-help audio tapes. I found one called Motivation to Exercise. It was only 10 bucks, so I bought it. I listened to it last night and if nothing else, it's very relaxing. And I did get up this a.m. and exercise- did 20 minutes of yoga. Not much, but it's a start! Good luck with your plan.

Me too--exercise has been ignored as I am unmotivated, but it is not just lack of motivation for exercise--it is lack of motivation for most things.
