How are you today?

Posted by Sourceror on December 2, 2001, at 0:31:12

What is up with the fake I give a crap question...."How you doing today?". This makes me so annoyed. Could you imagine if one of us just started unloading how we actually feel on one of these poor unsuspecting souls...I bet it would be the last time they ever casually asked that question. Sorry I work in retail and hear it all to often and felt like venting a little.

Actually...... I'm glad people don't genuinely want to know. I'm pretty guarded with how I feel ya know? Just say something like..... "well, I can't complain... it wouldn't matter if I did."......

Yeah, I know it's kind of a fakey question, but at least it's an acknowledgement of our shared humanity. When I recently moved from out west to Chicago, I was very much taken aback by how brusque some cashiers can be. There's a fine line between being "honest" about the fact that we don't/can't hear the whole truth about how someone else is and being a negative psychological drain. A mean human is much less humane than a super-friendly, fakey machine. (I'm thinking here of the grocery stores in my old home state where they had express lines where you could check yourself out...kinda like an ATM. Infuriating! But I digress.....)

BTW, I love Chicago and Chicagoans...it's just the customer service in my neighborhood that's iffy.

My random 2 cents....

I too hate lying and replying "Fine thanks". My answer of preference is "As usual". This can mean anything to the inquirer and it's then up to them whether they inquire further. Should they then inquire further then you can totally unload onto them and it's their fault for pushing the issue!
