When I recently moved from out west to Chicago, I was very much taken aback by how brusque some cashiers can be. There's a fine line between being "honest" about the fact that we don't/can't hear the whole truth about how someone else is and being a negative psychological drain. A mean human is much less humane than a super-friendly, fakey machine. (I'm thinking here of the grocery stores in my old home state where they had express lines where you could check yourself out...kinda like an ATM. Infuriating! But I digress.....)
