Canadian Politics

Posted by Janice1 on November 16, 2000, at 18:45:30

Please don't forget about our very important referendum going on at the moment. In case you haven't heard: Rick Mercer, the comedian from This HOur has 22 Minutes, wants Canada to force Stockwell Day to change his name to Doris Day. He is collecting names at www.22minutes.com in order to have a referendum. We are doing very well, but as you know every vote counts.

Did you hear what Stockwell Day said about homosexuals? That 'it was all in their heads'. I wonder what he thinks about the mentally ill?

And the Americans thought their election was wild.

I heard about this on As It Happens, but I have no idea who Stockwell Day is in the first place! Can you fill me in?

Janice - I know Stockwell Day, if only to say hi. He worked down the street from me for a number of years. His comment on homosexuals was probably "baited" out of him by a reporter. I think that homosexuality does make him uncomfortable, but I really doubt he said (or meant) that it was "all in their heads". The old Stockwell (ie 2 years ago) would have made an off-color joke, but would definitely not have meant any harm. He seems to treat everyone with the same respect that he would expect (outside of the occasional Eastern Liberal). Besides, even if it was true, his personal life and political life really should be kept separate.

Even better, Rick Mercer for Prime Minister. That'd be cool! ("I'm sorry Mr.President, but you're begininng to believe your own press")

On voting to change his name to Doris Day, I'd rather see it changed to "Haveanice" Day.

Just my 2¢ - Cam

Leader of the Canadian Alliance Party - somewhat akin to your Reform party with a blend of Republican right...

Sounds good to me.

And while we are at it, perhaps we should rename one of our US politicians "Chad"......

Hi Cam, Hope you're well. I'd vote for "Haveanice" rather the Doris.
Love, Kath

Hey - my husband just suggested, instead of Doris - "Good" Day

Or in the True Spirit of Canadianism he could even add "Eh" after his new name

Good Day - Eh? Kath

Hi Cam, Kath, dj and Noa,

I wish he'd keep his personal life, personal. His politics would do better - at least back here. I still like Doris better (partly because she hung out with homosexuals).

hi Noa,
the poll was a response to one of his proposed policies. That if he was elected, Canada can have a referendum if 2 or 3% of the population wanted to vote on an issue. Rick Mercer was just demonstrating how easy it would be for Canada to waste its time and money having referendums on anything. What people are concerned about are gay rights and prochoice, as Day is a practising fundamentalist christain, and these issues have been long dead in Canada.

Now I don't get this Chad joke
If it's Chad bush ... I don't get it
If it's Chad gore ... I don't get it
It it's Chad clinton ... i don't get it

and those are the only 3 american politicians I know. explain please.

Although it's none of my business, I'm hoping Gore wins. Hope everyone is well, Janice

Noa - The vast number of people in the West voted Jean Cretian (Cretin?) for another 4 years. The Liberals won just over 170 of the 301 seats (majority government, sigh), but they only won 14 seats in the west. Again, the west gets screwed by the east. Sometimes I think we'd be better off to go it alone and forge ties with the States, rather than having Ottawa suck our natural resourses dry, take taxes from us and give them to the "have not" provinces (all of which, by coincidence, are in Eastern Canada: the Atlantic provinces and Quebec) as "transfer payments".

How soon people forget. Last election he promised to get rid of our federal sales tax (GST), but almost ended up raising it. Our Prime Minister also keeps getting away with giving large government grants to friends and constituents, gets called on it, but nothing happens. This is the same guy who says he "knows" street people and they tell him that they "want to live in the streets". He was also the guy who had the RCMP pepper spray peaceful protesters in Vancouver and, on another occation physically choked a protester who got in his face. Sometimes I think that Canadians really don't know what's going on.

- Cam

that's the very worst of it Cam. The West can take power, but I highly doubt with someone like Stockwell Day as the leader of their party. And of course they'll need the votes of the East. No one back here is in love with the liberals, but we sure wouldn't want a fundamentalist Christain who's wife supported a prolife group that consistently lied to women about what happens to them during an abortion. I mean, haven't you been watching the documentaries about them, how he thinks humans walked with dinosaurs and the earth is 6,000 years old? his campaign was half as*, and Chretein lied, Day lied (or got confused) about issues during his own campaign.

what i'm trying to say is, if they were better organized, with a more sophisticated leader, and less extreme (as to appearing less rasist, homophobic, sexist), they'd easily get votes back here.Janice.

Janice - Can't argue with anything you've said. I was just hoping the Alliance caucus would have moderated and of Day's personal beliefs. As for the missus, we haven't seen any wives of the Prime Minister in public since Maggie slept with Ron Wood. As for the alternatives: Prime Minister Preston (check out my new haircut) Manning or Prime Minister Joe (yes, we are a viable party with 4 members) Clark or (snicker) Prime Minister Lucien (give back Canada to the French and give us everything we want) Bouchard. I shudder to think...

Hey, if I had known that Jean (Mr. Photo-Op) Chretien was such a nice guy (handing out a $10 CDN bill to a homeless person), I'd have definitely voted for his party. (sigh) The Yanks think they have problems in Florida.

Who knows, in 4 years King...er, Prime Minister Ralph. 8^)

Hope you're doing well, Janice. - Cam

HI Cam,

Maggie was good. Now I'm not sure if I remember this because I would have been a very young child or if I remember people talking about this, but didn't Maggie also sleep with one of the Kennedies (Ted maybe) and then ended up in the Psychiatric ward?

Haven't seen Manning's haircut - but he doesn't have the kind of face that could just wear any hairdo
I like Joe.
Bouchard looks mean (I don't know if he is)
Duceppe now he supposidly thinks he could speak for the entire nation.
I used to see Ralph walking his dog. My dog did not like his dog...hmmm...so I guess that means i couldn't vote for him. But then, he's the one that can balance a budget, n'est pas? I'd have to give that some more thought.

I heard someone at work refer to Jean as the Godfather of Canada the other day. It made me laugh, with those images of him strangling his countrymen who get in his way, and giving gov't money to his friends. Plus, his accent almost sounds Italian sometimes.

Yes, when people break politics down into gossip, where it really belongs, I become interested, intensely interested.

I am doing good Cam, my pills are doing their jobs wonderfully. I'll be back out west for Xmas. Hope you're good. Janice
