Depressed and anxious - Help

Posted by pingles on November 1, 2009, at 8:10:42

Hi,

I'm a female in the mid twenties. I have become more and more asocial and don't enjoy things as I used to do. I think a lot has to do with my work, which I really hate. I work as a practical nurse and I take care of elderly at night, very hard work when I`m alone with 20 patients for about 12 hours a night. The problem is that I don't have enough energy to take care of myself now.
There are two factors which affect my mood. For about 3 years ago, my biological father, (who has got some type of manic depression), lost his mind and harmed me by throwing me into the wall and then downstairs a concrete stair after beeing invited to my partners 30th birthday party (he got too much to drink). I got a bad knee after that. Have done several surgeries and now I have to take painkillers every day to ease the pain. I will meet him in the court for the 2nd time, and I hope this nightmare will be over, soon, but Im scared for life. Have suffered both psychologically and physically.

The other factor, is my work. I really feel inside myself now, when I'm not doing well at all, and have no energy to give to others, how am I gonna keep doing that? I think i really need some kind of medication, but have never taken anything before.

I have been talking to therapists in the past, after what my dad did to me. I dont call him , my dad, anymore. No contact between us, thank god.

The best part of my life is that I got a wonderful partner in any way. We have enjoyed life from the first day we became a couple and he is by my side even though he has got his own medication for many years for depression.
So i feel safe and loved. I just want to find the one I used to be. Happy and social etc..

Any ideas and suggestions appreciated.
English is not my mother tongue, so I hope I can make myself understood.

Best wishes,
Pingles

Hello Pingles,

Welcome to Psycho-Babble. Thanks for sharing your story with us. It sounds like you're going through a really rough time. Sorry about what your father did to you. That was awful and I hope the nightmare will be over soon for you. You deserve justice and I hope your biological father learns his lesson soon.

You work sounds like it is very demanding both physically and mentally. You said you do not have enough energy to take care of yourself right now, much less others. Do look into help for your depression and anxiety. There is definitely help out there. Medication and therapy helps many people. Taking medication isn't actually that scary.

Are you able to take a vacation to destress from work?

I'm glad you have such a wonderful partner. Can you ask your partner for help in getting through this rough time? Family and friends can help a lot.

I hope you feel better soon. Let me know if you have any questions about Psycho-Babble and I will help you the best I can.

Deneb

Hi Deneb,

Thanks for your reply!

I reported sick to this night tonight.
I always go to work for five nights and then have five nights off work.

I can also say that I have very nice friends at work at night time, so I have told them about how I'm feeling and can be honest. That feels important.
I have no vacation to take out, I already had my autumn vacation, so tomorrow morning I'm gonna make a call to get real help, and I believe that I will get it.

About my partner, I'm sure I will get help, though we can speak honestly about all things in life. But I feel that I need to see a pdoc and a therapist and hear some expert opinion.
I'ts hard to know what would be the best to do, but I know I have to take som time off from work.

I have lived with my partner for four years and have been there for him when he had depressive episodes. I guess I always tried to be a strong woman, could never in my mind see myself taking any medication. But now I think it will be the best solution, for a short or a longer time period, I will see.
Looking forward to get some help tomorrow morning.

Do you have any suggestions for meds that would suit me? Would be nice to have some ideas when I call my pdoc.

Kind regards,
Pingles

It's good to hear you have people who understand you from work. Maybe you can get a doctor's note to take a few days off work.

I don't know as much about meds as the people who post on the medication board. Perhaps you can ask for suggestions on the meds board. I know a lot of doctors prescribe SSRI's as a med or anxiety and depression. SRNI's like Effexor are popular too.

You'll have to talk to your doctor to find out the best med for you.
