My thoughts have historically been opposed to my trying to stop them, or talk myself out of them.
It works better *for me* to find the humor in them, or make humor if there is none.
It's hard to take fearful thoughts seriously if they're incongruously set to silly songs. Not nursery rhymes though. That can sound surprisingly scary. More like bubble gum pop.
Or if I exaggerate them slightly and look at them from an odd angle, there is often something genuinely amusing about them.
Kind of like the spell for Boggarts in Harry Potter.

Great to hear you find Harry Potter helpful too, Dinah. I am especially moved by the Mirror of Erised ('desire' backwards) when Dumbledore suggests that Harry does not spend his time dreaming of what might have been, and forget to live. I do this so much - from a child I have always found much comfort in fairy stories.

That is a good one too. Yes, I think there's a fair amount of wisdom in Harry Potter. And it makes for a more fun way to help sometimes unpalatable truths slide down. :)
I think the ideas on Muffled's link were great. I was just adding a few more, since the more ideas there are in the mix, the more likely each person is to find one that suits them in a healthy way I think.
This is the end of the thread.
