Age and therapist

Posted by Phillipa on October 10, 2007, at 0:17:43

Anyone think that age makes a difference when connecting to a therapist as the ones my age I thought would relate with be better not so as they seem to be in competition for being strong. The one I'm going to see now is younger than my Daughter but her friend is a social worker and the most empathetic person felt like she was drawing me in and really cared and this therapist is her friend. I'd love to have this one but she doesn't see private patients. So anyone base their choices on age or sex. Thanks Phillipa ps by competition the older ones think you should know how to deal with your life at your age. Should they keep asking what's to be afraid of it makes no sense to me. Gee if I knew I wouldn't be asking you. Does this make sense?

I think the chemistry between a therapist and client matters more than age or sex of the therapist. I've had some adjunct therapists over the years, and also the therapists who I saw when my therapist was gone. I didn't really like any of them, male or female, older or younger, except for him.

I think in general I'd do better with male therapists, since women tend to intimidate me more, particularly if they're sophisticated and flawlessly accessorized. But of the two men I saw, other than my therapist, one was too brusque, and the other was too distant.

One woman therapist was fine over the phone, but clearly judged my appearance negatively and changed her attitude a lot in person. The others just weren't right for me.

Still, my son had a female play therapist for a while that I'd have seen gladly. And I've told my therapist that if my female well dressed and lovely neurologist was a therapist, I might well prefer to see her. She could walk in the room and instantly assess my mood, comment on it with sensitivity, draw out the reason for it, and all in ten minutes or so. Wow.

Just find someone you click with. The rest will fall in place.

Thanks Dinah hoping this one will be the one. Once had a male older than me quite strange kept saying ducky ducky.End of him. One for anxiety here very cold and judgemental first session was last. Then one who was as she said on antipsychotics and antidepressants and thought I should be too as they helped her, then another one here female just no clicking and then the one I've seen about my age here who is dressed to immaculate and thin as a rail and I come in in shorts and she looks me up and down and there goes the self-esteem. So this is the last time I'm going to see a new one. Just not worth it to me. Phillipa
