Posted by rjlockhart on July 20, 2006, at 0:19:25

i dont know what the hell is wrong with me, i think i frustrate myself to death about things i do. sometimes i wonder im a psychonuerotic,

sometimes i will think of something over and over and laugh about it, after its not even funny anymore...... watch the danm same movies again and again, thinking about what the hell im doing walking around in circles, im not joking either....

Listen to outdated songs sometimes like 80's, have wierd intrests, like a long time ago i used to collect vacuums, how in the world would someone really care about taht? Well i do listen to songs today, but i just dont envolve myself in whats happening. Thats the problem. Maybe its confidence. There is so much more i want to post but i cant even think about it, let me see, when i talk talk with a studdered impaired talking and i feel like an IDIOT! (i have to drink energy drinks to feel stimulantion to talk)

Where in the hell is a psychiatic manuel, im writing down all my danm disorders.

Please someone, and also why do i relate to girls better sometimes. I hate that. But then there is somethimes, i dont know they think im wierd.

Someone please! tell me what i have!

Matt you are perfectly normal. You need put away the DSM and read more novels. They help you realize how much weird stuff is in everybody's head. Start with "Catcher in the Rye" then "Confederacy of Dunces" and anything by Mary Gaitskill.

What you have is called "Adolescence," and most of us get over it. It's kinda time limited.

I know that sounds flip, but I've read enough of your posts to know that there's very, very little actually wrong with you. You probably have some sort of anxiety disorder -- like many of us, including my husband who is one of the mentally healthier people I've come across in this world -- and you say that you have ADD. That might be all there is, Matt. You're anxious, and have a hard time paying attention.

There's no easy fix to get through it. You just gotta live through it, and if you think about modifying your behavior in order to get a more favorable reaction from others, you might find things improve. One thing I'll suggest is that you make an effort to seek out more social situations. Whatever it takes to do that. Social cues can be learned, Matt, but they take practice. And the more social contact you have, the less time you have for rumination about yourself. That's the "cure" for what ails you right now.

I'd also say that therapy would be a good choice, too, because you'll have someone to help you learn the social cues, and help you manage your reactions.

Good luck.

I think that would be a pretty interesting; a collection of vacuums! I know someone who collects skiis. Has tons and tons of them in his basement. Other than that, if you can plow through a whole psychiatric manual you must be pretty darn bright.

>>You just gotta live through it, and if you think about modifying your behavior in order to get a more favorable reaction from others, you might find things improve.

That is just the awnser i have been looking for, i need a psychologist badly. I have a psychiatrist, but thats not really the awnser to my problems, what i need to really start doing is practicing but when i practice i mess up. Stick my head in the toilet....

>>You're anxious, and have a hard time paying attention

Yes that is very true, you really do know my behavior.

Well here it is since i was i kid i had problems relating to people. I didnt get that "dopamine" release when you talk, and get stimulation. I have taken supplements like l-tyrosine which increase dopamine, and did make me more social but more miserable, i had a headache, felt like vomiting. I took waay too much.

I am 19 yea, but still racer in high school i never talked, i mean can you imagine that? me not talking, well ididnt know how to relate, that stunted me. I need to work on this.

Thank you for the post.

oh yes i am going to read the DSM manual, maybe taht will be my new habit.

Im joking, but seriously i want to read about some kinda of symptoms i have.

I do have anxiety disorders, so that may contribute to ridulous behaviors, like walking backand forth.

DSM-IV is overrated!

hi Matt-
check the book out, don't buy it! And don't go overboard when you read the book and decide that you have this or that disorder or symptom. before you get started, write down the symptoms that are actually hurting your relationships, hindering your achievement of your goals, and symptoms that are truly distressing to you.

If you do something that's not completely typical (like collecting old vacuum cleaners)- you may just have a "quirk"- it's not pathological unless it's actually hurting your finances, or you develop obsessive or disordered thinking about your collection.

I was amazed when watching a TV show that in PA every year there is a convention of hundreds of people who collect ice-cream scoops and other ice-cream paraphenalia. They looked pretty normal to me. I often feel like a freak because I only listen to classical music. Adolescence is hard like that. Anything that makes you feel different from your peers is magnified a hundred-fold and it's hard to put things in perspective and not to constantly compare yourself to some ideal.

There are a lot of cool books out there. You might enjoy some of Tom Wolfe's stuff- he writes about a lot of interesting real-life characters.

Tabitha, I got "Confederacy of Dunces" after I read your post. I'm about 1/3 through it so far. It can make me very uncomfortable because I AM IGNATIUS J REILLY! I feel like my life and behavior track his virutally point-for-point. Yoix.

I sure hope it has a happy ending.

pseudoname,

I had to laugh when I read your post. At first I thought, wow, he really has guts to admit on a public forum that he is like Ignatius! Then of course I realized that, if you are in fact like Ignatius, you wouldn't give a fig what anyone else in the unsavory masses would think!

I read Confederacy a number of years ago and just dug it out recently to lend to a friend when it was included in the NYTimes list of best American ficiton for the past 25 years. When she returned it last week I started rereading it. Due to my bad memory, I don't remember how it ends. But it sure is full of great characters!

BTW, in trying to find your post to reply, I googled Ignatius on dr-bob. Check it out. There were a few Confederacy threads on the books forum back in 2002, and at least one other babbler who proclaimed "Ignatius c'est moi!"

It does end happily, but not the way I wanted.

Thanks for that "Ignatius c'est moi" tip! Oh, wow. I wonder whatever happened to Elayne and Jane D.

There are certain parallels between Ignatius and the author, too. (Someone had helpfully written them in the margins of my library copy.) At one point, Ignatius fears that his mother will take all his scraps of writings and notebooks and publish them herself and make a fortune. Which is exactly what happened to Toole.

There's a biography of John Kennedy Toole, "Ignatius Rising", that got mixed reviews on Amazon, but I'd like to read it.
