How does it feel to think about how your therapist attracts new clients? It is a part of any business so it is necessary. But has anyone every had the experience of seeing their therapist's web site or ads or flyers?
My son's therapist has established a web site and it is kind of strange to "hear" him "sell" himself.
Just musing tonight...

Dangerous line to walk.
You don't want therapists going too far to get clients, but then again, a lot of people out there need a therapist but might have never thought of seeing one until they see an advertisement.
People with problems can be vulnerable and that could cause problems with advertising ethics and such. I know when I'm feeling bad I'll do about anything to try to feel better.

My T has a web site too. I found out about it by leaving her a voice message one day last summer and her voice mail said, "If you would like to learn more about my services, please visit my web site @ www.xyz". Well, I had to check it out. And it was very nicely done. I was happy that she had posted a photo. At first it worried me, is she going to close up her practice if she doesn't get more clients?
But I know what you mean. It's odd seeing her sell herself. Her web site is consistent with the therapist I know, so that is reassuring. It's genuine. Before that I found her at Psychologist Today's web site, "Find a therapist in your area." In there she gives different sort of information about herself. I find it all interesting. Maybe I'll e-mail it to you.

I got my CBT therapist through his online ad, complete with photo (accurate).
I think that's actually better than simply getting a referral — assuming the ads give a lot of accurate information about what the T offers, prices, specialty, experience, etc.
The portraits in the ads, though, feel a little weird. They're like "I look compassionate!" or something.

Hi Daisy,
I found my T through an ad in a local health publication. What she said about her practice appealed to me. It took me almost a year to get up the nerve to call for an appointment. Good thing she runs that ad every month.
She is on two websites, also. One is Psychology Today's Find a Therapist, the other is for one of the energy techniques she does.

Mine can't get organized enough to be included in the yellow pages.
But he does do a lot of those public service talks. On anxiety or stress or whatever. That's how I found him.

The therapists where I go don't do any advertising...they all get referrals by the pdocs, or by word of mouth. Good thing (for them) they're all so busy.
